Resident Evil is the classic game of survival horror. It helped mold the way my generation views zombie games. From the perspective of gaming history, it is irreplacable. Since the game's initial release in 1996, the series has sold over 35 million games. (Per Wikipedia... The initial release was, of course, not the director's cut.) The controls are a bit counterintuitive for anyone used to playing video games. Up is not up on the screen, but forward in the direction your character faces. Down is not down the screen, but 'back up.' Left and Right pivot the character to his or her left or right. It only took a few hours to really get the hang of it though. And, given the sometimes interesting camera angles, this is a blessing. You find yourself looking up at your face, head on, down, a strangely angled down from a balcony overlooking your location from upstairs.... There is no end to the places they wanted you to see, including the underside of your chin. There are some other aspects of Resident Evil that lack the 'flavor' of a good game. Sometimes shoddy dialog ("This is a lockpick. It might help if you, the master of unlocking, were to take it with you.") and bad voice acting seem to be the major negatives. Still, this game has unique puzzles and a (*gasp*) backstory. None of that infinitely recycled movie amnesia nonsense here, our characters are Racoon City's answer to the SWAT team. Not only that, the story, the controls, and most of the items that you can gather stay relatively consistent throughout all the iterations of Resident Evil. (Something not even Super Mario Brothers managed to pull off.) All in all, I will say that it is a must for any horror afficianado's personal game library and award it four stars.Read full review
Any true Resident Evil Fan will remenber the Classic orignal Resident Evil the Mansion,Courtyard,Basment and the Labs there all hear the great Charecters if not slightly off voice acting Jill,Chris,Barry and Wesker ect. The large array of weapons and the teffiring creatures well there all hear. But hear in lies the games problem theres very little added to an already great game. Although it was really made just to conponsate the Resident Evil fans for the delay in the production of resident evil 2. However that dosn't mean its not worth buying first off the game in its orignal packaging is very RARE and it must for any Resident evil collection. Even though there arn't many differents there are still some noticable ones. There are new starter outfits on the harder diffuculties and new outfits after you've completed the game. A couple of the rooms have been changed as well although not many and not much Enimies are more or less the same however there is one new and quite famous enemy who makes he's first apperance who is quite famous over the Residet Evil universe the Zombie Forest Spyer who makes he's first apperance in this game. There is also a large extra for the Japanese and North American versions of the game aswelll the uncut opening to Resident Evil which is quite graphic although all non North Americans and Japanense gamers don't despair the video can be found easily on the Internet try YouTube or the New blood Resident Evil site. There is also a new mode Arrange mode much like Deadly Silences Rebirth mode were Enimies are stronger and items have been moved round but the guns are made sligthly stronger. There is also a Easier diffuculty setting for begginers there is also included with some versions of the game the Orignal Demo for Resident Evil 2. Were as the Graphics are a little sharper the game is pretty much the same so really it only as a limited play value but it should keep fans happy and it is a good game to try for people who are new the franchise because of the easier diffcultie. Although mainly a collectors item it is still a good game an in my opinion worth getting. This game came out in 1996, and still remains one of my favorites. The game play is about 8 hours but it feels a lot longer, just when you thought the mansion is the only part (since its already huge) you discover other areas that are just as complex, the story gets better and more complex as you play through the game, weapons get more awesome as well. Try play the game in easy/normal mode first, don't let the hard mode's lack of ammo ruin your experience. On the down side, your lack of carrying space sometimes force you to return to a tool chest too often. You can't escape in-game cut scenes. Pushing objects sometime aren't very responsive. The controls takes a bit to get use to. Over all this game is a must play if you are a true gamer. I also recommend Silent Hill for the playstation one if you want to experience another great classic horror that defined the modern horror genre.Read full review
I played this game since I was in 4th grade, I remember a kid named Spencer won it at some thing the goose at school was doing and getting to look at it in school and how scary it was. The gameplay I couldn’t make it passed the first dogs cause the game scared me so much. I still play this game and love it to this day and reliving the anxiousness and excitement of a truly scary game. Best game ever and the whole series on ps1 is what I am familiar best with

I haven't played the original Resident Evil since release. I know the graphics are dated but that doesn't matter to me, it's still a great classic survival horror game. I definitely recommend this game for any survival horror fan. I also got the very rare single disc variant at a great price. This variant is getting extremely hard to find on eBay.
