The trippy Beatle's cinematic masterpiece. This has a Universal rating as it is very family friendly, but can be related to on different levels by different age groups. The Animation is very varied, with rotoscope ( the process of drawing over live film..) and cut-out techniques employed. Colourful it most certainly is! Back to that bit about different levels: youngsters will see a comedy cartoon with a good v evil theme, yet adults will appreciate the nuanced storyline for it's dream sequence visuals, and the way it contrasts grey Liverpool with the psychedelic power of The Beatle's music: after all this is their weapon against the dread blue meanies. A fantasy steeped in animatic reality, Yellow Submarine will forever capture the hedonistic and also good natured mood/ moods of the 1960s: this DVD release compliments the original film by digitally cleaning the film stock to bring new lustre to the great animation. Added to this are extras showcasing art not even included in the final film, and an option just to listen to the film's soundtrack, which includes Beatle's material and also great orchestrated music by George Martin. Is there a happy ending for Pepperland? You'll have to watch it to find out: suffice to say the real Beatle's only appear once, will they be lovely rita or a day in the life? Highly recommended, like gear, fab! Read full review

as a huge beatles fan i knew all about yellow submarine. i already had it on video format but was keen to own a dvd version. obviously my view is biased but nevertheless i still would give it maximum points. i know the beatles contribution to the actual film was nil there is always the music, which is as fresh as ever.
Brilliant after all these years. The wackiness of the early Beatles in visual form, completely encapsulated the period for me. And the music is a bonus, of course!
