About this product

Product Information

X-Men: Children of the Atom is a 2D fighting game and represents a departure from Capcom's tried-and-true Street Fighter II formula in terms of gameplay. The game's stage backgrounds are all composed of two or more levels; if characters are thrown down hard enough, the floor can break, dropping both fighters to the next level down. The game's ten playable characters are drawn from Marvel Comics' cast of X-Men mutant super heroes and villains, each with his or her own assortment of super moves.

The game offers a few innovations on the Street Fighter II formula. Fighters can perform regular jumps as well as super jumps. During a super jump, the fighter jumps so high above the fighting level that the game has to show an arrow indicating where the fighter on the ground is. The game also changes the properties of special attacks based on which button is pressed along with the joystick motion. Cyclops, for example, will shoot a low eye beam with the weak punch, a head-level beam with the medium, and will shoot diagonally upward with a strong punch.

X-Men: Children of the Atom has an X-Power bar for each character during a fight. Characters can fill up their X-Power bars by attacking their opponents and performing special techniques. The bar itself can be charged up to three levels. At the second level fighters can use an X-Ability, the equivalent of a regular desperation move. When all three levels are fully charged, fighters can unleash Hyper-X techniques, which are equivalent to super desperation moves. If a fighter has all or part of his or her X-Power bar charged after one round of a fight and must fight the same opponent for another round, that portion of the bar is carried over.

Product arrived damaged, but it wasn't their fault and it was just the box (cards were okay). Other than that, price was good and shipment happened fast.

    Saturn is underrated

Games like this is why this system is so good. Anyone that grew up during that era of gaming tends to believe that the PS1 and N64 were the best systems. They were in regards to 3d gaming at the time, but in 2d games the Saturn destroyed those 2 systems. Capcom Fighting games were and are great. This game won't disappoint.

  • X:CotA Historically significant classic

CotA is the first fighting game Capcom made using Marvel characters, and was very groundbreaking for its time. Of course, being the first of its kind, the gameplay reflects many shortcomings of a new style of fighting game being pioneered, and it shows the roots of many good ideas that became Capcom fighting game hallmark features. CotA was their first game to feature super jumping, dashing, air blocking, and a focus on using hyper energy bars (the precursor to Street Fighter Alpha's alpha bars and super gauges), and had the beginnings of the air combo system, used rigorously and with much more elegance in the later "Vs." series of Capcom games. This was the first in the series of Marvel fighters, its sequel being Marvel Superheroes, and CotA's characters and elements ...

  • Capcom's Earlier Vs Efforts

Like the other reviewer stated, the game was all right for its time when it was released, but is no match for the newer Vs. games that were released later on. The loading time could've been better for the Saturn and I can't comment on the PS version because I didn't play it. I did play this in the arcade and I must say the game was great. The game gives you a decent amount of characters to choose from. I like Psylocke, Wolverine, Spiral, and Iceman. If Capcom were to release this again for the newer systems with enhanced graphics and loading times, I would definitely pick it up. The game is worth picking up. I purchased my first one disc only from Funcoland in 98 or 99. Enjoy.

  • A must buy for fighting game fans.

This is the best 2d fighter ever made unfortunately people rape for the us version I bought the Japanese version the only negative it’s hard magneto will haunt your nightmares.

  • Amazing game, I'm so happy

Such a fantastic game! Pretty hard, but worth the time invested, so happy I could add this to my small collection of Saturn games
