I bought this drive to use as an archive device. I use it to store data, plain and simple. This drive is not so hot on the speed, but it is reliable on the storage side. It is a really good drive, and I like the green features. I just wouldnt recommend it as a system drive. It is slow to recover from slowdown, and it's data transfer rate isnt spectacular either. None of that matters to me. I wanted a reliable drive that would last, and that makes this drive a perfect fit for how I use it.
The Western Digital Green series drives offer a great value. They are not the fastest drives, but they are not intended to be. They are not intended to be boot drives, and if use one for a boot drive you have done the drive and yourself a disservice. They are intended to be high capacity drives that are reliable and conserve power. They do this very well.
Drive came formatted as an apple drive. Had to format it as windows drive. Appears to function well. Time will tell.

Purchased 4 of these for a RAID array. Despite rumors that this "green" drive is not RAID compatible, I have not had any problems with the drives dropping out. The drives do go "green" by shutting down and parking the read heads when not in use to save energy. It takes a few seconds for the drives to turn back on after being dormant. But once spinning again, data transfer is exceptional. I am able to do upwards of 120mb/sec through a gigabit network connection. I would expect, with the green feature, the drives should have a longer lifespan than non-green drives. Also the energy savings will add up over the long run. I would recommend this drive for normal day to day usage. If you are looking for high end performance, choose the more costly Velociraptor or caviar black (WD2002FAEX) capable of 6.0gb/sec transfer rate.Read full review
I replaced a 500GB HD in a WD MyBook Pro with this 2TB Caviar Green and it works very well. Installation was easy, data is accessed quickly and the disk is quiet and energy efficient. I would definitely recommend for this type of application or even a secondary internal disk. This would probably work fine as an internal HD, although the Caviar Blue and Black lines are more aptly designed for an internal application.
