I decided on this Yamaha SW012 because of its size,(used in a small room {14' x 15'}, specifications, simplicity, and the quality and value from the Yamaha name. The unit is 11" x 11" x 11" so it fits nicely into the base of the wall cabinet/shelf, below the stereo equipment. It packs 100 watts of power which accents the bass tones of the music beautifully, and it has a volume control knob so you can customize the total effect. When you increase the volume on your Receiver, it will increase the volume from the subwoofer proportionally. It connects to the Receiver with a single RCA cable. The power plug is connected to a switched outlet on the back of the receiver so when I turn off the receiver, the subwoofer turns off. The 8 inch speaker adds adequate, extra bass to all of my music - Classical, Dance, and the walking bass in the Country Oldies never sounded better. This unit does not have all of the extra variable control knobs and switches found on larger units - Phase - By Pass, etc., so it is much less complicated to use, and costs a little less. For a small box, it packs a pretty good punch. It certainly satisfies my needs to add an emphasis to the bass tones of my music. Can be used in a home theater set up too.Read full review
Sounds amazingly good for its size and price point. Much better than the 2 Polk's I bought previously that were much more expensive. I've owned a lot of Yamaha stereo components, always top quality

If you are on a tight budget and want to enjoy some more low end from your music and movies you can't go wrong with this sub. Instead of spending $200 on a mediocre subwoofer, pick this up for under $70 used, and save up your extra money so that you can eventually replace it with a SVS, HSU or BIC subwoofer. I use these in my desktop setup in a small room. The sub blended in perfectly with my speakers and brings in the lower end that I needed. You will not like this subwoofer if you are in a large room, or if you want the bass to rattle your windows from 10 ft away. Caution: This doesn't have a built in LPF, so you you need to adjust it from your reciever.

Great response for its size, easy to set up, easy to place (will fit most any room). Excellent addition to Yamaha receivers and home theater systems.

The Yamaha YST-SW012 Subwoofer Speaker is an excellent choice as a subwoofer for a small room application. It's small size and price are coupled with a big sound that seriously enhances the mini or small home theater experience. I used the unit in a work out room setting where i use a mini-home theater to distract me from the endless hours I spend on a cross trainer, etc.
