Lots of hate is being put against Bodom's latest release "Are You Dead Yet?". Not all of it is unjustified however, lets take a closer look... It is quite prevalent that Alexi wanted to go with a more stripped-down, simple approach here. HCDR threw up plenty of red flags, but was still a great listen, right up there with their previous two masterpieces. AYDY continues to push the sound solidified on the previous album, but to such a degree it loses a bit of its edge. The chugging guitars are a bit TOO simplistic, especially for this group of talented men. Even more so, Janne Warman's skills are wholly underutilized on this release. Watching the band live, Janne simply leaves the stage when some AYDY songs come up, because he isn't used at all! Alexi's vocals continue to deteriorate, with lyrics this daft, we don't want them to be decipherable, thanks. "Oh my god, you're so fine!" as a line in "In Your Face" makes me want to cry. Minus the above gripes, a lot has improved in The Bodom Camp, as well. The production really brings out bassist Henkka Seppala, and gives the guitars a really sick tone. Drummer Jaska Raatikainen also benefits from the production, showcasing his ever-improving drumming abilities. "Trashed, Lost & Strungout" is one of the better tracks on the album, and shows that with a little Viagra, the bands "Still got it" now and then. Solos have always been a true trademark of Bodom's sound, and they still remain top-notch, saving tracks that would otherwise be stinkers like "We Aren't Gonna Fall". Opener "Living Dead Beat" contains some of the best; what few keyboard solos are on this release are superbly executed, making us want more and wonder why the band chose to keep them restrained so much. The album starts out quickly, but loses steam near the middle. "Punch Me, I Bleed" is a highly underrated tune, and a honorable successor to "Angels Don't Kill". After that we're treated to the bore-fests "Next In Line" and "Bastards Of Bodom", merely vehicles for solos, they make you wonder if the band had trouble actually writing a meager 9 tracks. Truly the most disappointing release by the band, but not grounds to lose all hope....just yet.Read full review
This is the weakest effort C.O.B. ever put out.Their earlier stuff was much better and i have had a lot of hope for this band.I love the Ramones but hate C.O.B. cover of the great classic song. They remind when the Scorpions covered the Who and don't sound like understand what the words mean.I hope Blooddrunk is much better than this and i was planning on catching them live. But,now I wonder.I know they can do much better than this.Hope they don't because the new millennium version of Suicidal tendencies who peaked real early.
