While looking for some new music to fill in some gaps in my library, I remembered this great release from Van Halen. I dont think I will ever forget the intensity and ball of energy and attitude that exploded off the stage and washed over me and the audience on the Women & Children First tour. Man that was when the band was smokin hot! It was smoky, hot, people were drinking and smoking and having a good ol time!It was rock n roll the way I liked it. Incredibly loud rock music and lots of women at this big rock show on a warm spring evening in Rochester, NY I think Diver Down has some amazing moments like "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?", "Secrets", and "Intruder" jeez the screaming wall of feedback that Eddie so expertly controls during Intruder is simply awesome! I could have gone for less of the "Big Bad Bill" and "Happy Trails" material for more fret burning from Eddie and some serious thunder from Michael Anthony & Alex Van halen on bass & drums respectively. When Van Halen seriously rocked out-no one could touch them, but when they tried to get down with the keyboards and synthesizers, it was a major bummer for me. I wish Eddie had kept his focus squarely on guitar.Read full review
The greatest questions ever asked, Ginger or Mary Ann? Beatles or Stones? Dave or Sammy? This is David Lee Roth's last album with Van Halen. He was off to ruination, Van Halen added Sammy Hagar to its lineup and clicked off more music. The music was different. With Dave Van Halen were a tougher, harder group. I preferred this over the Sammy led group that spun off a slicker more radio friendly sound. That being said this is not the best of Dave and Eddie. Dominated by covers that include the inexplicable "Big bad Bill is Sweet William Now", and some instrumental noodling to fill time, this album seems to have been thrown together with left over stuff and kicked out. That being said, there are some have to have songs you won't get on best of albums. Mainly "Little Guitars" and it's intro which is a mind blowing Flamenco guitar blast from Eddie. These were the main reasons I got the album. Another Kinks cover of "Where have all the Good Times Gone?" And Martha Vandelis 's "Dancing in the Streets" are here. Not exactly "Running With the Devil". The price right. It's not a $15 buy but it's worth $5. Only place I found "Little Guitars" and that's worth it.Read full review

While this CD contains some good songs such as Dancing in the Street,Pretty Woman and Little Guitars, Diver Down is by no means Van Halen's best record. Much of it is rather bland especially when it's predecessor, Fair Warning, is a much more dark and emotional album. Not to say the songs are bad, but it seems like it's being held back in some aspect, which would make enough sense because it was on Van Halen's previous album that tensions between Eddie and David Lee Roth formed. Overall not the worst, not the best. If you want the best, try Van Halen I, the aforementioned Fair Warning, or the one you probably know all about, 1984. Diver Down hangs around the average and less provocative 80s Van Hagar releases.
Underrated but polished Effort by VanHalen My favorite ROCKS
