The M1570’s are the best planar headphones I’ve come across. I took a chance on them and was glad I did. The sheer volume they produced wowed me. But it’s not just power, it’s precision: they reveal subtle details, even in a dense mix, that I don't hear in lesser headphones. The M1570’s also have a neutral, non-fatiguing sound, so they respond well to EQ if you want to experiment. The negatives: the M1570’s are huge, but I’m not really bothered by their size, and I consider my noggin to be a little smaller than average. These cans are also heavy, though not excessively so. Reviewers will put on the M1570’s and foolishly swing their heads around to demonstrate their awkwardness, but I think that’s really making a mountain out of a molehill. The M1570’s are meant for calm, critical listening – why would anyone idiotically toss their head around with these cans on? A more pertinent nuisance is the use of a proprietary mini XLR connection, with non-standard pin-outs. To buy a replacement or balanced cable, you either had to get it from Monoprice itself or get it custom made from a third party. This made users unhappy when the M1570’s were first released, especially since Monoprice didn’t have a balanced cable ready at launch. Thankfully, balanced cables are now available, though supply seems limited. If you see them around, grab them if you really want one. The M1570’s don’t absolutely need a balanced connection, but if you have a balanced amp, you'd be silly not to try it. If a given amplifier has sufficient power on single-ended output, the M1570’s should do their magic. But without enough juice, they will sound murky and dull. I would also recommend trying other ear pads. The stock velour earpads had a center membrane that was too dense, masking the drivers more than I liked. I bought another set of velour pads that had a thinner membrane, and that noticeably improved the sound. With some tweaks and proper power, the M1570's are the best planar headphones I've ever heard.
