    Turning Point

I loved this movie when it was first released and it has held up well. This was where I first saw Baryshnikov and watching it again brought back some lovely memories for me.

  • The Turning Point (with MacLaine, Bancroft)

This film is mainly for balletomanes, as the talking sequences are repetive and somewhat specialized to the world of ballet; while the dancing, though vividly photographed, is not exceptionally varied musically. Also, is the viewer to feel sorry for the mother, who seems to be experiencing "The American Dream"? The plot concerns an ex-ballerina, now wife and mother (Shirley MacLaine) and an aging prima ballerina (Ann Bancroft). Baryshnikov co-stars as the young romantic lead, involved with the older daughter, now studying ballet in NYC. In fact, the various dancers as portrayed do seem quite self-centered. The viewer might well applaud the younger daughter, who does seem to love her lovely home and all that life offers in Oaklahoma City. Indeed, "life in the fast lane" of ultra ballet ...

  • The Title should have had Baryshnikov's Name included.

Thirty years later, The Turning Point is still the definitive ballet dance movie. The young genius Michael Baryshnikov of 1976 remained on top of the dance world into the present time. But oh my god!! No one has ever danced like him. It is amazing to see how incredible he was! The movie also showcased several other ballet greats of the late 1970's. Leslie Brown stepped out of the background to take the starring role after Lelie Kirkland was too injured to perform and she became immortal as the young star who got to perform with Baryshnikov. Great, great dance movie.

  • One of my favorite movies

One of my favorite movies. However, the Gala has a different section of the Black Swan coda and not the fouettes. the VHS has the fouettes. Go figure.

  • Excellent movie

This is a great movie. Not only does this movie have great actors, but also dancers. The underlying drama is interesting, too.
