My truck clunked, quit and cost me a $100 tow fee after 3 brief runs in a 1986 Mustang 302 in my 45 year old 1978 Ford f100. Turns out the distributor's gears sheered after less than 1 hour of running on 3 separate occasions upon calling MSD tech service today, I was told that the 8582 distributor has an iron gear which is not compatible with the 1988 302 that came in Mustangs. I have to ship the distributor back to MSD and they will install the proper gear on it for less than $100. I had originally bought the 8582 distributor about 2 years ago new on Ebay for the previous engine in my truck, which was an Early 60s 289 cid engine from an unknown Ford car. The MSD technician said that the 8582 with the iron gear is appropriate for that engine. I hope they are correct. the engine was running very well when the gear gave out and best of all, eliminated the need for ANY vacuum lines on my engine.Read full review
