Great plot + great art + great writing = perfect comic series!
This volume collects the first half of Matt Fraction's Iron Fist series. Iron fist has often appeared as a secondary character in the Marvel U, and this is his first solo series in several years. This volume explores the history of various Iron Fists, focusing on four in particular. One of these, Orson Randall, Danny's predecessor, works directly with Rand in the first half of this collection. This book also gives the backstory of Danny's father, Wendell, and how Danny became the Iron fist instead of his father. Throughout this story, Danny has to compete in a tournament against the champions of the other holy cities (Danny represents the city of K'un Lun as Iron Fist). While this tournament is occurring, revolution is brewing in K'un Lun, while a Hydra leader ... This volume collects the first half of Matt Fraction's Iron Fist series. Overall, the story is intricate enough to be interesting, but not so much so that you easily get lost. Aja's art is very well done, and it really gives the book a martial arts feel. The writing is very witty, and, combined with the eastern concepts and setting in the book, oftentimes has the same feel of Avatar: The Last Airbender (the animated series, not the god-awful movie). The plot is relatively self contained, which is good for readers new to Iron Fist (like I was). There are a few references made to the Civil War event, and there are a few Heroes for Hire characters that Fraction and Brubaker assume that you are familiar with, but that's all. And this trade paperback is gigantic, probably the biggest paperback that I own, so you get a lot of reading material for your money. Overall, this is one my favorite comic purchases that I have made in several months, and I can't recommend this enough to both veteran Iron Fist fans and new readers alike. I'll definitely be looking for the second volume of this collection coming out this summer!
