Upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003
As supplied, the older iPAQs aren't really that good and certainly not in 2010. However, if you find the upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003, they suddenly become compatible with a lot of software intended for later machines: The iPAQs were overspecified for their day which made them somewhat future proof. The 3970 differs from the 3950 in just one way: The 3970 has Bluetooth 1.0, the 3950 does not. Both feature a 320x240 (or 240x320) touchscreen, 64MB RAM and 48MB ROM around an Intel xScale PXA250 400 MHz ARM5 processor. You get an SD card slot which can add up to 2GB of SD card (or micro-SD in an adapter) or an SDIO peripheral, such as WiFi. There's also a port for a "sleeve" which the PDA slides into, common sleeves or jackets were GPS or CompactFlash - or both, in ... Compaq's iPAQs were reviewed pretty badly against Dell's Axim line in their day, mostly on the iPAQ's battery life being much shorter. However, iPAQs have survived much better over the years due to their high specifications and good build quality. You can still get batteries, parts and service for the iPAQ 3900 line, such is testament to their longevity. Probably the best buy of the series is the 3950, which lacks Bluetooth (big deal) but has everything else the top-of-the-line 3970 has. I now own a 3950 and a 3970 and, since the 3970's BT is almost always turned off (flipping SD cards is so much quicker), there's no difference between the two. They're supported out of the box in Windows Vista, but XP and Windows 7 users must download ActiveSync (XP) or Windows Mobile Device Center (Win7). Note that upgrading the system to Windows Mobile 2003 can only be done in WindowsXP or 2000. I did mine in an XP virtual machine managed by VMWare Player and it was successful. The transflective display has an important property that most displays do not. You can turn off the backlight and use ambient lighting, such as how a calculator display works. This works very well for e-book reading, where the iPAQ 39x0 gets a battery life of over a day's constant use. That life is shortened with the backlight on, but the convenience of reading books in bed without noisy page turns and without having to hold the book open is a greatly unsung benefit. Microsoft Reader (uses .lit format) is included and there's a huge repository of freely downloadable works if one looks around. Reader also uses ClearType, which the OS does not. You can enable ClearType via third party tweaks or just editing the registry yourself to set it to enabled - The OS has it, it's just not enabled on most devices. This, of course, needs Windows Mobile 2003. The final word is that yes, you MUST get the Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade (via whatever means, now HP have stopped selling it, it's not difficult to find) to make these things useful. Sadly there was no WM2k3 Second Edition for this series, but all it really added was native 90 degree display rotation. Most apps which use it (video players) can do the display rotation themselves. Highly recommended for hobbyists or just those curious as to what came before the smartphone.

Bought for GPS device with navman jacket-Interesting Strong and pretty.Excellent image on direct sunlight.Tranflective display. Good and easy software,but a litle old(win.pocket 2003).Fast and very complete-bluetooth,infrared.

Ipaq 3970 with GPS expansion
The IPAQ works well as does the GPS pack when in open air. However the GPS does not receive a signal anywhere inside the car, which for a car nav system is useless. Perhaps a separate Bluetooth GPS unit outside the car would work better.
