Great recorder but did not totally meet my needs.
I am a video pro who makes cable TV shows. I use Final Cut Pro - Studio 2 and DVD studio pro to make DVDs. These tools do a high quality job and there are none that are better. However, my 4 core Mac Pro still can take hours to render and compress the files. Sometimes things need to air in short order! Using a Matrox MXO box, broadcast quality SD video comes of the extra DVI port off the computer. S-Video output goes to Line 2 input on the DVD recorder. Audio comes from a USB audio output box. A simple play on the computer and pressing record on the DVD recorder makes for a good quality DVD recording that can air from the playback center at the local cable company. I have 2 things that I did not like: 1) The new Sony formats form folders that are "Locked" when ... I am a video pro who makes cable TV shows. This reduces the software that can be used to re-import video into Final Cut Pro (FCP). I can use HandBreak to make MP4 video files, but those files don't import into FCP currently. I wish Sony had an option to turn this locking off. 2) There is an iLink IEEE 1394 port on the recorder. It would be nice if there was a way to output directly from the computer's FireWire port into this to burn a DVD directly by making the DVD recorder act like a tape deck. Price wise - the recorder is a great price for what it does. The Matrox MXO is $1000 though which is a bit pricy as a combo with the DVD recorder.

I bought this Sony DVD Recorder Brand New in 2008 and it still works GREAT!
Sony has never let me down. I bought this Sony DVD Recorder/Player NEW in 2008. I've used it many times, It records fine, I have lots of DVD movies and they play beautifilly. I am keeping mine forever. I had bought 2 originally planning on putting it in my guest room, but then I moved to a smaller place and didn't happen. I LOVE SONY Electronics, the old items that have lasted me forever. With all the new garbage from China being sold nowadays, I am happy I purchased this Sony DVD Tunnerless Player/Recorder to keep. Sony has never let me down. I bought this Sony DVD Recorder/Player NEW in 2008. I've used it many times, It records fine, I have lots of DVD movies and they play beautifilly. Sony RDR-GX355 DVD Player/Recorder
I like the ease of setting up a recording session and the easiness of the setup for use. I have had many Sony VCR's and TV's before so I had an idea what to expect and I was not disappointed. The input selection is great as well as the variety of recording times. Overall this machine lives up to the Sony name for a quality system. I have had trouble with previous DVD recorders in the way it did not finish a good disk but not on this machine. It was so easy to do my first recording on it with minimal setup and a finished disk worked terrific with no problem setting up the title and finalizing it at the end. Overall this machine should be easy for a first timer as well as a old pro at recording their favorite videos.I like the ease of setting up a recording session and the easiness of the setup for use. Excelent HD quality at bargain price
I purchased two of these DVD recorders, one connected using HDMI, the other using component cables. The quality of picture using HDMI is remarkable. Almost life like. I have seen BluRay and this is close as you can get without the expense. The record feature is very easy to use. I recommend these players for the price as these are high quality devices for very reasonable prices.
