Product Information

Block Buster for the Microvision handheld system is a Breakout clone in which you control a paddle that moves from side to side at the bottom of the playfield. You can choose from two paddle widths: Double and Triple. After pressing GO to serve a bouncing ball, your job is to keep the ball in play by rebounding it off of the paddle, effectively hitting it toward a three-layer wall of bricks at the top of the screen. Each time the ball hits a brick, the brick disappears. You score one point for bottom row bricks, two for middle row bricks, and three for top row bricks. <br><br>You can play Block Buster in either Slow or Fast mode. In Slow mode, the ball will accelerate to fast when it hits a top layer brick. In Fast mode, the ball remains at the same fast rate of speed the entire game. If you manage to knock out all of the bricks, another wall will appear. The game continues until you have let the ball get past your paddle 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 times, depending on how many balls you chose at the beginning of the game.

A handheld system way ahead of its time
As the very first handheld game system designed by Jay Smith of Vectrex fame, this system has the distinction of beating the Nintendo Game Boy for being an interchangeable cartridge system by a full decade!! Although primitive using a simple LCD screen, block graphics (no true characters or detailed graphics) and using batteries faster than a vintage Hemi drinks gas, this is a true retro game gem. Using interchangeable cartridges to play different games, the offerings are limited with Cosmic Hunter, Alien Hunter, Connect Four, Star Trek Phaser Battle, Sea Duel, and the pack in game Block Buster, being the best this system offers. In addition, there is only simple bleeps and squeaks with the exception of Sea Duel which plays a simple nautical tune. Play is accomplished by a dial and keypad ... The first problem is because of the fact LCD was an emerging science in 1979, many LCD screens used in the Microvision will eventually suffer from the dreaded "screen rot" a condition where the crystals in the screen spontaneously leak and darken the screen rendering play for the console affected completely useless. Most Microvision consoles will suffer this condition eventually and no cure or replacement has been found. So please consider this if you choose to buy one of these consoles. Two other conditions, electrostatic discharge and keypad deterioration also affect this console effective rendering the console useless as well. This system is well built but has it quirks and if you are lucky enough to find a fully functional unit with its screen intact and the keypad still responds, keep it!! Functioning systems are getting rarer and rarer and are starting to make this collectible system an excellent conversation piece!! (not to mention more and more expensive)and despite the quirks, many have survived to the modern era and are being enjoyed by a growing legion of retro fans. So in summary, if you are able to live with the quirks, primitive games, and possible screen loss, this is an excellent system to collect and one worthy of being in any retro video game collection!!
