Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom is a costume-drama dating sim, with supernatural themes, moments of macabre violence, a dry-witted young protagonist, and her multiple, developing love interests. The game plays as an animated "choose your own adventure" story, throughout which the player's decisions lead to different conflicts, resolutions, and ultimately, one of many possible conclusions. An attractive woman among a clan of young male warriors, the main character finds herself an object of both chivalrous admiration and carnal desire, whose decisions take on great consequence.<br><br>The story is set at the end of Japan's Edo Period, where a secretive fellowship of honor-bound warriors emerges in the political turmoil of fading feudal power. The main character -- called Chizuru by default, but re-namable by the player -- is traveling in search of her lost father, when she unexpectedly encounters the Shinsengumi. Pledged to protect the people from master-less samurai and other rogues, these vigilante soldiers take Chizuru into their fold, for her protection as well as their own. When it is discovered that the diverse group of strong young warriors is also looking for her enigmatic father, Chizuru's adventure truly begins.

An otome game with great character development and well-set out system.
People may flock to this because they think it is a dating sim, some may run away because of that. However I found the romance to play a secondary role in light of the character development. Each person has their own story and being the visual novel game that this is, you get to discover this in detail. As for the plot...it borders on cheesy, I'll give you that, but there are some interesting turns and you don't have to go down the route you don't want to. I bought this game cause I enjoy any games set in a historical period and visual novels are fun. The one problem I have with this game is that you can only fast forward parts you've already done rather than skip them entirely, although everything else is well set out in the way that you can quick save to view the other options or if you ... A Wonderfully Diverse Dive into the Fantasy Filled Edo Period (Romance!)
Absolutely wonderful, This game is always easy to pick back up weeks later and get back into because of the summary in the title screen of what you've done so far. I had been wanting this game for awhile now, and it was totally worth the wait! I've cried, laughed, and found myself seriously thinking about the history and outcome of my actions. If you enjoy fantasy mixed with history, and of course japan, I can assure you, you will LOVE this game. Playing this game, you have to put yourself in a different mindset. You have to think in a way that someone back it this era would think. Don't get caught up on the deaths that occur. Takes your breath away in every aspect!
I bought this because I am a huge fan of Japanese otome games and was fond of the anime made of it, once I heard of an official English release of the anime I was excited, but when the game was being dubbed officially, I couldn't get it fast enough. It was better than I had hoped. Beautiful artwork, nicely translated dialogue, and my favorite part, being able to go back if you choose the wrong option. All otome players know this is an extremely desired option. There's not much I dislike about it, I would had preferred that they translated the voices into English instead of keeping it Japanese, but it's okay too. Great game for those who love choose your own adventures!
I love this game and the story that evolves around each character. I was always a lover of the choose your own adventure books, and this game really brings to life that concept while adding in a bit of romance, high action, and only a slightly annoying protagonist which you play. All in all this is a great game, and worth buying if you love to read!
