  • Top critical review

    Good for the Price.

This lens leaves more to be desired. I would recommend the "VC" version due to the fact that this lens cannot produce sharp results at any focal length, aperture, or set shutter speed. The lens does have decent performance where there is good lighting. Some nice things about the lens: compressibility (it can become very compact), metal mount (durability), Build quality (made from plastic, but a solid lens nonetheless), af/mf switch, and the 18-200 range is great if you cannot switch lenses. Would be a great lens if it had vibration control, therefore I recommend the "VC" version of this same lens.

  • Good all-purpose lens

I bought this lens to use as an all purpose lens. The zoom range gives you wide angle to telephoto all in one lens. I mainly shoot cars and people, often at events, so I need a lens that can go wide enough to shoot an entire car at close range or a large group of people, as well as pull in a car or person at a distance. I had bought the Tamron 28-300 zoom first, but found the 28 mm focal length (at the APS-C format) isn't wide enough for group and whole car shots. This lens works well for that. I also like that it's relatively small and lightweight, so it's easy to travel with. I have no complaints about the optics or clarity of the photos. The downside Tamron's autofocus motor. It's noisier and coarser than a Canon, which can be a bit awkward in quiet situations (like a wedding). ...

  • Good walk around lens

I gave it 5 stars for value because I got it for less than $50. It was one of those "as is for parts" deals. It wouldn't meter or focus but for me it was an easy fix. It really isn't that bad of a walk around lens and the images come out pretty sharp at f:8. Compared to my other lenses, it has a tendency to record higher contrast images especially at the long end. I use it on a D300s, so programming a default exposure setting to compensate for the high contrast wasn't a big deal. It also has typical distortion for this focal range especially at wide angle, but nothing that Photoshop can't fix. Two switches at your finger tips are an autofocus/manual focus switch and a zoom barrel lock, which is good because the lens barrel will creep. Overall physical quality is pretty good for a plastic ...

  • great lens but heavy for its size

This is a very good lens for fullframe cameras, works well on subframes that have drive-motors as well...just one caveat with it, it's not light. Very sharp and reasonably fast and clear for a superzoom but it's a pocket full of change. you can check the specs on slrgear.com this lens is 550g vs 430g for the Tamron 18-250 which is the equivalent lens on a Sony with body-IS And that extra 120 grams is really noticeable on a light camera. It doesn't help much on a heavy camera :) Seriously adds to the inertia. But the IS is very good, it doesn't vignette much like the T18-250 on a subframe...it's a good all-around carry. As long as you don't mind carrying it :) It certainly makes WAY more sense than the Canon 28-300 EF-L IS at 1670g and $2250 retail.
