    The Great Western

    This is one of the Great Westerns of American Cinema. Filmed in large part near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with the Grand Tetons as a backdrop, it is visually aesthetic before a word is spoken. Alan Ladd is Shane, a sure handed gunman who comes across a homestead under siege by local cattle barons. Van Heflin, the courageous, out numbered rancher holding on to his dreams. Jean Arthur, the farm wife, who brings beauty and elegance to a role no longer projected in modern cinema. Their will opposed, the cattle barons send for Jack Palance, who turns in a commanding role as the hired range assassin.     The movie was as good as I remember

    This is a classic western that I remember watching growing up. It includes an all star cast with Alan Ladd playing the lead role. The dvd itself was in almost new condition and a nice addition to my collection.

    "SHANE:" Scenic, characters exemplify human qualities, both good and bad. Reminds me of my late father, who took me to see this movie, and who took me, in the summer of 1955, to Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons, near the filming site. This is one of my all-time favorite movies. "THE HOMESMAN:" Believable, compassionate, heroic portrayal of ghastly realities in the historic West. Important historical fiction for humanitarians.
