  • SUPERB WRITING [HORSES]

All the Pretty Horses: 1992 It is seldom that an author can move his reader to the actual place where the sights, sounds, feel and even smells are real and in your face. This book does it. The Crossing [his next installment in the Border Trilogy] does it even better and the third combines the lead characters of each of the first two, John Grady Cole and Billy Parham, with an ending that is as brutal and tear jerking as any read out there. McCarthy has gone on to write No Country for Old Men [soon to be filmed by the Coen brothers], The Road [2007 Pulitzer Prize winner, fiction] and a new short play Sunset Limited. This is writing at its very best. No contemporary author is even close.

  • All the Pretty Horses, great read.

Read it twice. I was the same age as the young boys (16 and 17) who were the main characters that loved, talked and whispered to their horses in the early 1900's. They travel to Mexico to see what it's like and work for a family that herds and breaks horses. There is a love story and because of a young acquaintance they meet on the road, the two end up in a Mexican prison where they get into fights for survival. There is much violence in this book. I had ordered a copy that may have been marked up with lines and notes. It was, and the marks made no sense and were distracting. The story itself was a #10. Being I have read thousands of books, a story has to be remarkable for me to give it a #10.

  • Did not like this book.

This book had some great moments. There is much insight into the characters, etc. But I found the ending to be so harsh, so disquieting and so depressing. I have had enough depressing things happening in my life. I don't need animals screaming for their mothers. Another book review of the third book said it had a brutal ending. I don't need brutal either. I am 61 and I have heard the screaming of abandoned children, dogs that have been starved to death, and children dying. I need things like HOPE, FREEDOM, PEACE, ETC.

  • Can't read.

The page's were over written by previous owner. Can't read book.

  • Pretty horses

Have read The Road and No Country for Old Men previousl and really enjoyed these books. McCarthy is a very entertaining author with numerous unexeceted insights, This winter I wanted to read the border triology and this book is the first in the series. Really enjoyed the book,
