In the tradition of DIE HARD and PREDATOR, director John McTiernan presents audiences with yet another techno thriller: THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. Sean Connery plays Captain Marko Ramius, a dissatisfied Russian commander who navigates his submarine towards America in an attempt to defect. Soviet intelligence claims that Ramius is a warmonger and that he plans to launch nuclear missiles at the United States. Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin), an iconoclastic CIA agent, believes otherwise: American spies have determined that the submarine is powered by a stealth engine. In order to save the "caterpillar drive" and avoid a nuclear incident, Agent Ryan must board the Red October and assist Captain Ramius in its navigation to U.S. waters. Both murky and captivating, the underwater visual and sound effects are reminiscent of DAS BOOT. Once again director McTiernan produces a winning film with a jagged plot, a well acted script, and plenty of explosions.

    The first entry in the Jack Ryan series remains as the best

    I saw this movie many years ago, soon after its VHS release. It has been a pleasant surprise to find out its enduring quality as solid intelligence thriller, even when some of the visual effects look dated (from the very early years of CGI). The story is very well crafted, specially at managing a lexicon of technical terms while keeping the storyline on the move, capturing a faithful feeling of the Cold War scenario as a chess game between military forces, intelligence analysts and diplomats. Despite some remarkable performances from big names like Sean Connery, James Earl Jones or Scott Glenn, it's less a character driven movie than an fun thriller with some amazing visuals that seem taken out directly from military operations at sea. It lacks some of the elements that make a classic, but ...

    Great film!

    My husband especially enjoys this movie. Sean Connery is superb, as usual. The story is fast moving and entertaining for the most part. Interesting to see the thinking going on in the Super Powers' brains and how little it would take to spark off another world war because of nations' distrust of enemy nations with mass destruction of human life hanging in the balance!

    Sub Hunt

    This is a great movie, it gives me a chance to interrupt the Russian with my eyes closed to my sons, who watch the movie with me just to hear me speak it and interrupt the language I learned from my late husbands nephew who's parents escaped Russia. The movie is great in two ways the language but also, the action of the movie it shows so many things. I know its a non-fiction movie but still, you wonder.
