I'm a very serious hobbyist and purchased this lens for times when the 35L was not wide enough. I primarily use it on the Canon 5d mkii. While the bulid quality is not on par with a canon L lens, niether is the price. Center sharpness at 1.8 is plenty good enough for prints, and by f/2.8 it's razor sharp corner to corner. The most interesting quality of this lens is the close focusing distance, which combined with the wide field of view and wide aperture, make for shots not possible with any other lens. It's a very fun lens and for the price, a teriffic value. The only drawback is the lousy sigma focusing motor which sounds like a coffee grinder, and less-than-smooth focusing ring. I often bring this lens along on trips just because it is a fun lens to shoot with, and offers a lot less ...

  • Stellar Performer! Excellent IQ!

This lens is often under rated and overlooked! This is a fast lens in a great focal range! Macro, not a true macro, but more a close-up, but it works well for flowers and the like. Great portraiture lens due to the creativity that can be gotten with the f/1.8 aperture! Bokeh is amazing! CA/PF is super well controlled and seldom ever rears its ugly head!! Build quality, massive, lol, like a tank! I did not think I would like a prime lens in the focal range in the beginning, but I was converted very quickly to loving it! AF is nice and quick and relatively quiet for not being HSM. Focus locks on good and very accurately. Contrast, sharpness, and color reproduction are just perfect! This is an awesome fast aperture lens! Works well in good light as well as poor lighting!

  • Everything you need in a FX wide angle

The Nikon started in the $700, not going to happen. Sigma solid build quality and excellent image makes this the right choice at a reasonable price, f1.8 is spoils you. Rounds out my prime collection nicely.

  • Excellent lens.

The perfect wide and fast prime for the price. Immediately became my new favorite lens, and is on my camera almost all the time.

  • Only marginally useful.

I expected a macro lens to be much sharper than this one is.
