18TB HHD Good Medium for Backup Use

It's exactly what I wanted for backup purposes. Doing videos for YouTube, I've amassed quite a number of video clips and the usual smaller hard drives and NVMe SSDs quickly fill up. The NVMe system is great for fast transfer rates but are still quite expensive and, from what I've read, aren't a good medium for the long run. The hard drives aren't perfect, but I don't recall having one fail on me. This reliability factor is important for archiving and speed isn't necessarily all that important. Backups can be run at nighttime. I'm using a Unitek hard drive connector to my OWC Thunderbolt 4hub. I'm still waiting for my M2 Mini Mac from Apple. It's late on arriving so I've got it connected to my old 5,1 Mac Pro just to see how it runs. No problems so far! Keep up the good work.

Unreliable under-performer that will make you cry

One of the six drives ended up failing within the one year warranty period, and a second drive caused TrueNAS Core to report that it was slowing down the already abysmally slow volume. Despite being in a 6-drive RAID-Z2 configuration, these drives performed worse than an old SD card and rarely exceeded 45MB/s from the entire 6-drive array. The previous drives (8TB HGST SAS) would deliver 550MB/s consistently in the same configuration. I've learned my lesson to continue steering clear of Seagate and stick with WD. I should have trusted the Backblaze failure rate numbers showing that Seagate has drives die at orders of magnitude higher rates than their peers.

  • Great HDD with excellent storage capacity

I've had it for a few months now and it has functioned flawlessly. Nothing to complain about except that you lose quite a bit of space due to the overheads but I guess that will be the case for any HDD of this size. Will probably get another one eventually.

  • Lives up to Seagate's claims and specifications

This product works very well, meeting the high standards expected from Enterprise level drives.
