A Good Extractor Met its Match.
I had already tried less expensive extractors which seemed to push the copper deeper inside the brass angle pipe. This one, rated highly by a plumber on Youtube, ordered one size up (3/4in) for a a 5/8in pipe, fit the pipe nicely, with the tip having ribs parallel to the shaft, which would push counterclockwise rather than pulling the extractor inward. Unfortunately, the copper was fused to the brass, so in the end I had to ream out the copper residue with a re-threader.
