I can play through this book in about an hour and a half. What's interesting is that I keep trying different paths and combinations and I can't get certain situations to happen. Eventually you start skipping the text, too, because it's usually pretty irrelevent. It's a lot more challenging without choosing healing as a skill, too. With healing you just stop worrying about your hit points, cause nothing can stop you. It's much more engaging if you're considering every step because you're worried one more encounter might finish you off before you can heal up. The battle system is appropriate and favorable. A lot of the items are useless, and you lose your backpack way too often, which gets pretty frustrating. The whole point is to accept these challenges, though, because they make the final triumph all the sweeter. The worst thing the reader can do is cheat, because they'd only be cheating themselves of the experience of the challenge; which this book either is immensely or not at all.Read full review
I first read this, a choose-your-own-destiny book, when I was a teenager, and I must say, it ensnared my attention the entire time. The non-linear story unfolds at the refuge of the Kai, and leads to a desperate flight/trek/struggle to the capitol city. The plot actually unfolds around you, and, through your actions, you have control as to the outcome of certain events. Through an ingenious number grid system, located in the back of the paperback, battles can be fought, won, or lost. And, losing is rather favorable, just so you can start the adventure over, and make new decisions and alter the storyline. The whole series is fabulous, and a must read for any serious fantasy/role players out there.
This choose your own adventure series is so fun but out of print. This gently used copy is perfect.

This is one of the classics of game books. I bought a bunch of these for my son, because he had been reading choose your own adventure, and I thought he'd like these even more. He seemed to really like them, but maybe I bought them for nostalgic reasons. =D
