This is an extremely versatile camera. It features multizone focus, and multi mode metering (even includes spot meter option). It has dof preview so that one can estimate bokeh and depth of field. Overall, it is a good camera. One problem with EOS-A2 cameras. The mode selector wheel is very stiff. And, it breaks on some cameras. Except for this problem, I would have given the camera an Excellent rating. Ask about this before purchasing an A2. Takes great photos. I am very glad I bought it.
I was looking for a more advanced EOS body to mount some manual M42 lenses on and stumbled on the A2 after comparing specs with several other models on the Canon Museum website. Unfortunately I found out later that the A2 is one of a few EOS models that don't do manual very well. But having invested only $18 plus shipping in it, I wasn't feeling too bad and decided to see if I could still get some use out of it with standard EF lenses. I slapped on a cheap Tamron 28-80 zoom from my wife's old Rebel G2 and went out for a test run and came back happy enough to invest in a decent Canon EF 35-105 which makes this a really nice combo for about $100 total. I kind of like the size and feel of this model which suggests a 7D but without all the digital gadgetry and extra money. I haven't spent much time with the manual learning all the features but like to keep things simple anyway, shooting mainly in AE mode and taking advantage of the fast AF for quick shots on the run. I would call it a keeper.Read full review
This is a great light weight camera. I use it as a back/up to my Nikon F4 It takes some great pictures. There are a good number of accessories and lenses made for this camera whitch makes it nice. I would recomend it for a back/up or for someone who is starting out because of the ease of setting it up and the auto options it has. It has a fast auto focus and using the corect lens you will get great pictures.I have to say in my opinion it doesn't compare to the Nikon F4 and Canon in general has a holdback in the different lens moutning . But then this is an opinion and you know what they say about opinions.
I took my A2E on a getaway weekend to the coast and to me it proved to be the perfect camera for the job. I normally use an EOS-1N but I took the A2E instead because it is smaller, lighter and has a built in flash. The A2E (as well as the A2 and EOS0-5) were introduced just before the 1N and shares many of its features like, 5 point auto focus system, 1/8000 top shutter speed and mirror lock-up. Unlike the 1N the A2E has a built in flash, 5 frame per second shooting speed and is much more quiet and offers eye controlled focus, but there is a trade off. The A2E lacks the 1N's weather proofing and manual metering. Due to a licensing issue instead of a metering scale you get either a "+" or a "-" so you know whether you are under or over exposing but not by how much (the EOS-5, which is the European version, does not have this handicap). Also a note about the eye control focus, it only works when the camera is held horizontally, in the vertical position the camera selects the focusing point. All in all, this is a great camera for anyone wanting a full-featured SLR in a smaller package with the added convenience of a built in flash.Read full review
I didn't know what to expect when I won this EOS A2E camera. The Ebay seller advertised it as "Canon's finest film AF camera". After receiving the camera, setting it up, reading the instruction manual which I downloaded on line, and simply becoming familiar with the camera, I have to agree. Some cameras are "Intuitive" to use. That describes this feature rich Canon EOS A2E. So many of Nikon AF Pro or Semi Pro, or "F" Series cameras have given over to highly complex operations, calculations, and mulitple button pushing that the cameras "get in the way of" the picture taking. After all , the simplest cameras, the one that lets you take pictures and doesn't disturb you, that remain masterpieces of simplicity even though they are highly complex machines, are the ones that we seek out. The Canon does all this. Don't let "simplicity" fool you. This is one professional level AF camera with "Eye Focus, start up", programmed modes, easy to read control board, wide angle viewfinder with diopter adjustment, multi-mode action, and a decent weight and heft. If I had any criticism at all , it would be that the camera is almost too large. It feels good in your hand especially with the Vertical Grip accessory which is keenly engineered and well laid out. The camera is "simple" yet complex, and best yet......it is fun to use. I recommend this camera for serious AF film camera users over the Nikon F90 which has earned its stripes as a durable professional AF camera. The Canon wins in the engineering department, and the human engineering department. While this is not a camera you can learn overnight, or stick in your pocket for a quick street shoot type of day, it is a camera that gets out of your way and lets you do what you set out to do, and that is take photographs. Happy Picture taking. Buy a Canon A2E. You won't be disappointed.Read full review
Being that image quality in a film camera comes from the lens, I won't speak to IQ. As far as functions go, This is my favorite SLR camera at this point. I have 70 cameras and when I shoot 35mm film, this is my go to camera. All functions are easily accessible. It is lightweight yet still very well built. I love the built in flash. I use it for daytime fill flash and it is great. The focus speed is very good. Not as good as as a modern DSLR but being that film is so very expensive, I am usually not in a rush when I shoot film. So the minuscule delay in AF is a non issue. I have 4 Canon A2 or A2e cameras and I love them!

I LOVE the Canon line of film cameras. The A2 is one of my favorites to sling over my shoulder and take out hiking. 1/8000 speed will capture anything. Controls easy to understand and become second nature. I know we've all gone digital but for those of us who have to shoot a few rolls of film now and again the Canon EOS Cameras are the best out there and can be grabbed up for fair prices. I also use an Elan 7 E and an EOS 3. All my EF lenses work on these as well as the new digital models.
Wow, this is a killer camera. On my first day of studying it, I adapted to the standard EOS functions once i found them. Some of the options like exposure comp was a little difficult to understand but I figured it out. it shoots faster than any stock EOS ever even the 1n. The vertical grip on this camera is cool when you need it, and if you leave the on switch by accident, it was easy to mis fire. It was funny though because i was only testing a roll of film and testing different shooting modes and I miss-fired three shots in the blink of an eye. The camera was in high drive mode which shoots at 5fps! I was more happy than anything to know if i need a quick shot of a moving subject, I can get it a few times and even bracket the exposure. auto serv is cool too. If you set your cam in auto serv mode, and leave it...It will automatically focus on the nearest point in real time. This might be useful for wildlife or something. bottom line, if you love the EOS system and don't need e-ttl 2 find an A2. For hundreds less, this camera meets the needs of your advanced photographer who doesn't use off camera flash more than 50 feet.Read full review

Though I have at least one model from the entire EOS line. I never even bother to shoot the 700 or 850 or the 650. The A2 was the last one I needed to complete the collection. After running 10 rolls through the camera, I cannot understand why I waited so long to aquire one. First It is much lighter then the "1", "1N" or the "1RS" and has most of the features that I found so important in the other cameras. It is more robust than the elan or 10s.It is sort of like a RT on Steriods. The optional grip extension gives it great balance, and when equiped with the 24mm x 70mm F2.8 lens it is a dream in low light, medium wide angle, or short telephoto situations. I gave mine the test in the Black Hills, and Badlands of South Dakota. I had Wolf camera burn me some Hi-Rez disc's and I have been printing out some wonderful 16" x 20" posters that are every bit as good as my Mark II. The price was great (ebay at $39.00 without shipping) and the pop up flash which I always felt was ameurturish (sp), adds just enough light for fill flash shots without dragging out the TTL distributer, flashes, and cords required to shoot a high end shot. Don't get me wrong the flash will not replace that equipment but it is good in a pinch. If you could have only one modestly priced EOS, this is the one you want. It will not replace my high end cameras, but I can carry it around without worrying someone will steal it, or break it, and then I would feel terrible about it, after all I am not a pro, and I have to pay for my mistakes.
