My TV has one DVI input (no HDMI) and my older 5.1 receiver could not handle anything better than one optical input. I was using a Monoprice HDMI switch for my Xbox, Satellite and Blu-Ray which sent the optical audio to the receiver and also sent analog sound and HDMI to the TV, but then I had to use an HDMI to DVI converter cable. What a mess. Also, ten years ago I had set up a 7.1 capable speaker array, but I was running it off a 5.1 receiver for years. Who has $500 for a receiver? Saw this system, the Sony name and the features and I had to have it. Took up a collection for my birthday and only put in $25 of my own money. I really like the calibration microphone feature. I set that right where my ears would be when I'm sitting in my favorite position. It really works. When I'm sitting in the sweet spot, that sound is amazing. I wish it had separate A and B channels so I could run sound throughout the house for parties, but I'm sure I can figure that out. For the price, there's no better 7.1 system.Read full review
This Sony Receiver has done every thing I wanted it to do. For the price, This is a great 7.1 channel receiver. The set up was super easy! The auto surround sound speaker adjustment, setup was( with automatic mic)easy. It has plenty of power(watts). The sound is excellent. The romote is a little busy but i can live with it. The manual lack detail explanation. I use this Receiver every day(for TV or music). I would buy this Receiver again if i had to. Sony did it again.
I was a little skeptical about buying this receiver, but I am certainly happy I bought it! This unit is well worth the money and it performs excellent! Great sound, plenty of power and easy to operate. I have this hooked up to a Panasonic S30 plasma using hdmi and This receiver controls "everything" Once I had the unit "set up", I just use my Panny remote and it works everything!! TV, receiver and it turn on the subwoofer as well!! All I do is turn on the TV and THAT'S IT!! I have this connected to Polk audio center with Sony bookshelves and Sony Subwoofer. This is a great receiver and I'm very pleased with it.
I have attracted to this product because of the price. With compared to my old Yamaha AV receiver this product has less punch and less detailed sound.Settings are pretty difficult to understand to a non technical user. I have 2 main problems with this product.First issue is during GUI mode, if the receiver is heated-up, the letters are flashing on the TV. Therefore, it is very difficult to read as well as difficult to make settings. If I want make a setting then I have to switch off the receiver until cool down and then repeat the procedures from the beginning. The second issue is if I did not use the receiver for few days, some of the settings are erased. For an example, if you have a Bluray player and if you need to hear DTS HD Master audio/Dolby True HD then you have to set HDMI to "AMP" position. If you have not used the receiver for few days it will turn to "TV+AMP" position which is factory setting. In this setting none of the HD audio is produced by the AV receiver. Therefore, all the time I have to make the setting. This is very inconvenient. I do not know whether this is a product failure. However, I will not recommend this product to anyone.Read full review
This receiver is awesome and affordable. The inputs it has can suit just about anyone. For only 200$ you won't be able to find that is 105w 7.1 channel with video upconvert to 1080i, 3D capable, and has an iPod dock. My only couple of complaints are tha the upconverted signal would also play through the tv speakers, and it does NOT have a fan. After awhile, this thing does get on the warmer side. So make sure to have plenty of ventilation and you won't have to worry about it burning itself out.
I had one of these for several years and was very pleased with the performance. It finally died and I was happy to find another one which works perfectly. In particular I like the ability to change the inputs so I can get surround sound along with the video.

I absolutely love this receiver. I had an old Sony from 1992 that started making a constant buzzing noise. I knew it was time for an upgrade. After looking at several different options I decided on this one and was not disappointed. The sound quality is incredible on my Klipsch speakers. The functions work perfectly. I didn't realize how important a remote control was! I had to order it separately, but at least it was an option. I never knew how life changing a sleep timer could be on a stereo. Overall this was an incredible find.

I had a remote but I needed a "new" unit as the current STR-DG720 started to buzz after an hour. No buzzing. Great, even sound. Great picture for my blu ray.

I bought this to replace an older JVC reciever. I had had several Sony receivers prior to the JVC and really liked them. The JVC never had good sound, and especially poor surround sound. I am very happy now that I have a Sony again. The sound is back! Great sound and surround sound. The only thing that could be a little better is the manual. It is not written very well. I think it was written in another language and then translated. Also, the microphone that comes with the reciever to set up the surround system works great, but mine no longer works because I accidentally zapped it with a really bad jolt of static electricity (because it provided a path to ground).
