It played as well as I expected. I found my "lost", copy after I had ordered this one.

First, you have to be able to appreciate melodic singing and playing to enjoy Rafferty. If that is you, then this is a great album. Very few weak points, many strong ones. Of course, the hits are easy to compliment - Baker Street with its awesome sax line and haunting melody (good enough for the Foo Fighters to have covered recently); Right Down The Line with its reggae-influenced backbeat and Gerry's sweet guitar. But there are other songs on here that deserve heavy praise. The Ark opens the album with Rafferty's song writing skills on full display. He incorporates so many different sounds and instruments, but makes it come together beautifully. Stealin' Time is a classic tune that is musically diverse and well put together. The title track, City To City, Mattie's Rag, Home And Dry and Waiting For The Day are more up-tempo and provide good energy. If I have one criticism, it would be the self-indulgence of Whatever's Written In Your Heart. The song is beautiful and well-performed, the lyrics are meaningful and Gerry sings them with feeling. But it goes on too long and is a little too filled with soulful choir back-up singers. Overall, this is a great album and I had missed it for too many years. News of Gerry's death made me think of it again, and I'm very happy I added it to my CD collection.Read full review

Growing up in the '70s, songs like 'Baker Street' and 'Right Down The Line' were played on top-40 radio as well as some of the cooler FM stations. City To City became a chart-topper, reaching #1 on Billboard's Hot 200. I bought the album, and found early on that these other songs became just as memorable for me. I really enjoy most of the songs on this album, from the opening 'The Ark' to the fun-tempoed 'Mattie's Rag.' 'Stealin' Time' could easily have been another single, to my ears, while 'Whatever's Written In Your Heart' goes on a little too long, but it's still well written. This music is a throwback to a time when songwriting and performance really mattered, and Gerry Rafferty and company created a solid effort throughout this album. It truly is more than just the hits 'Baker Street' and 'Right Down The Line.'Read full review
