About this product

Product Information

The Harman Kardon AVR 146 5.1 Channel 40 Watt Receiver packs HDMI switching and extra front panel inputs into a unit that delivers powerful and clean audio for a home entertainment system. The main distinguishing feature of the Harman Kardon AVR 146 A/V receiver is the HDMI switching. HDMI switching allows this receiver to be connected to audio and video components that feature an HDMI output. Two SimPlay HD-verified HDMI inputs on the Harman/Kardon AVR 146 accept the HDMI output source of digital audio or video devices; then the AVR 146 switches the video feed and sends the audio straight through to the display. When the equipment is installed in this way, the user can then also connect the audio output of those devices using the three digital audio inputs on the Harman Kardon AVR 146. This lets the AVR 146 process both HDMI video and high-definition stereo sound from the same component. Connectivity on the Harman Kardon AVR 146 5.1 Channel 40 Watt Receiver is concentrated on the back panel, but the unit has welcomed inputs on the front panel as well. The front panel input section features 1 S-Video input, 1 composite video input, 1 coaxial plug, 1 optical port, and 1 set of analog stereo inputs. The rear panel has 2 HDMI inputs, 1 HDMI output, 3 component video ins, 1 component out, 3 coaxial digital audio inputs, and 3 optical digital audio inputs. There is also an output for the subwoofer. All of these connection options make the setup of a home theater system flexible. The Harman Kardon AVR 146 5.1 Channel 40 Watt Receiver also provides full surround sound capability. Surround sound formats processed by the AVR 146 include DTS (96/24), DTS, Dolby Digital, DTS (Neo:6), Dolby Pro Logic, and Dolby Pro Logic II. The extensive and clear user manual makes home theater setup and surround sound audio configuration smooth and helps the installer tune the speakers to the room. When the system is up and running, Harmon Kardon makes it easy to listen to music and video from an iPod through the use of the Bridge interface protocol. Front panel controls include the main power switch, standby/on switch, power indicator LED, source select, source indicators, volume knob, message display, tuner band selector, and tuning buttons. The front panel also houses the tuning mode toggle button that selects between manual and automatic. The automatic setting is an FM seek function. There are also preset station selection buttons. On the bottom toward the left and under the volume knob is a ¼-inch headphone jack. The front panel also has buttons for surround mode, surround select, and surround mode indicator. Additional controls are accessed through the wireless remote control, and the AVR 146 includes batteries for the remote. The Harman Kardon AVR 146 Receiver has dual independent power supplies that drive 30 watts to each of the five speakers at 8 ohms. The number of inputs and HDMI switching elevate the AVR 146 5.1 Channel 40 Watt Receiver to be on par with other receivers in the home theater arena, and the wide range of surround sound processing options make it compatible with a list of surround sound formats. The dual independent power supplies keep the unit cool as it provides professional quality A/V amplification in a device that is also an AM/FM receiver capable of playing music and video from an iPod as well.

Sound Quality Like No Other System I Have Ever Heard!

Harman Kardon has been known for their pure room filling crystal clear sound for many years. If you have not had the opportunity to listen to music the way the artists intended you hear it, then you need to turn down the noise. With any Harman Kardon sound system no matter how big or small, you can count on any Harman Kardon sound system to deliver this mind blowing full rich sound that they are famous for. I can't say enough about these systems. This is my second Harman Kardon receiver that I set up in my bedroom for my surround sound TV and I couldn't be happier with the results. This system delivers pure sound excellence, just like my newer Harman Kardon system in my den. Nobody knows sound like Harman Kardon knows sound!

    Turns on. Sound output blown

Description said cosmetic damage. Won't affect function. It's right it turns on and functions. Spent an extra $209 To replace the pre amp for the sound output. There was no sound.

  • Very Cool

Nice receiver for those on a budget looking for older/used receiver. Supports newer functions (DTS NEO 6, Dolby Digital EX) yet generally is sold pretty cheap because it is a few years old. I would say the sound quality is a bit better than my Onkyo TX-SR500, which is also an entry level model (older though). I would bet that this model compares favorably to any of the Onkyo TX-SR50_ models. Don't be fooled by low wattage numbers. Harman Kardon uses RMS values to give true indications of wattage. The peak is probably at least twice or 3 times the RMS. Also, anyone using speakers that have 1w/1m sensitivity of at least 85db could experience a steady output of 100db on each channel. This receiver is powerful, despite the seemingly low wattage ratings. Please note, I have not used the HDMI ...

  • The AVR-146 is a soothing musical experience!

I recently purchased the Harman-Kardon AVR-146 on Ebay for a friend. The weekend it arrived, he was out of town, but he insisted that I test the amplifier anyway. Man, what a surprise for a 30 watt amp! My old Radio Shack Minimus 7 bookshelf speakers suddenly came alive. I had no idea; these small bookshelf speakers could sound so good. The awesome sound this amp produces totally engulfs the room with a soothing ambience. The clarity is mind boggling, especially if you own a pair of 3-way mains. It even performed better than my Kenwood VR-6060 THX amp; and it’s rated at 100 watts per channel. Unbelievable! I was so pleased the Harman-Kardon, that I bought an AVR-240 for my bedroom. Anyway, outside of the sound, here’s what I really liked about the AVR-146: 1. HDMI switching. (although I ...

  • Adequate AVR, but it excels at my limited 2-Channel Logic 7 purpose

The AVR-146 is a decent lower budget 30W/ch AVR with many tech features lagging behind current standards (i.e. HDMI pass through only). However, I bought it to leverage the Logic 7 2-Channel enhancement circuitry and the amp is plenty powerful enough for that duty. In that limited capacity, it excels and is doing a fine job. As a bonus the styling matches the HK 3485, 120W/ch, stereo receiver doing the heavy lifting in the system.
