I myself own every Les Baxter's original Capitol Lps, stereo when available. Without any doubt, most of the best titles from Les Baxter' Capitol exotica years are here. Some may be missing, but this would have mean 3 cds. A 2 cds set is already a miracle: EMI does not (re)print under 10.000 copies, and this compilation was not expected to sell that much. The sound on the cd is huge, beautiful. Orginal mastertapes have been used here, an excellent remaster work has been done. Nice artwork too, from Mark Ryden mystic cover till the booklet, full of informations and new illustartions. A masterpiece.
Being a lover of music with eclectic interests I bought this thinking it would be the perfect introduction to Les Baxter. Being a huge fan of Martin Denny's early exotica albums, I just figured this would be fantastic and I could not go wrong. Wrongo! First of all I know that music tastes are quite subjective and that many people love this set. So there will be many who disagree with me. For me music that is exciting is interesting and different. This was neither. And when music is accompanied by orchestra(which a lot of this is) I tend to not like it or even hate it. I hated this set! It was neither interesting as exotica music or different(I like Martin Denny far more) and it had tons of orchestra accompaniment. As a lover of the Three Suns I don't like many of their albums(many of those are backed by you got it, an orchestra). To me orchestras often drown out the music and are so same sounding. Kinda like you've heard one you've heard them all. That's how I felt listening to this expensive out of print set. Other than a few jazz flavored tracks which I did like, I got bored quickly. Boredom from exotica sounds with orchestra, another kinda sound with orchestra, a choir with orchestra, this sound with orchestra, that sound with orchestra. Normally I give music several listens before I render a judgement but having heard more than my fair share of "orchestra music" it was all I could do to listen through both CDs once. Fortunately I was able to get my money back by selling it and the person who purchased it loved it. So all is good. But I won't be listening to anymore Les Baxter. Boring. Not recommended unless you are already a fan of Les. Then perhaps it is as good as it's reputation. But frankly I just don't get it.Read full review
Perfect music to enjoy while sitting by the pool with friends with that tall glass of your favorite beverage. Very relaxing and timeless recordings.

I absolutely love this album. The instruments blend together perfectly. I have a hard time relaxing after a long day at work. This goes into the CD player and the time and stress just melt away. If I ever get stuck on a desert island, this will go with me... and an endless supply of batteries for the CD player.
