Was about to replace my whole wifi system...
My double Airport Extreme + 5 Express system was systematically failing, and since Apple no longer makes wifi equipment anymore, I was shopping around for a replacement, which looked like it would cost me at least $500 for something equivalent. Then I noticed the weird behavior on my older Extreme (no front light, port lights flashing once a second) and was going to replace just the Extreme. Then read this problem may just be the power unit. Don't ditch your dead AEBS... buy an OEM power brick to keep the WiFi humming!
No LED at all in the front of your Apple Extreme Base Station, but the LEDs over the Ethernet ports are flashing green on and off? Could be that there's nothing wrong with your base station but you just need a new power brick. Put the old brick up to your ear and see if you can hear a screeching sound pulsing with the LEDs. If you hear a screech your power brick is bad.
