If you want to laugh, or are in a 'down mood', this is DEFINITELY the cure for you. Clerks, from writer/director Kevin Smith is one of the most original, humorous and delightful movies that you will ever see; not only will it tickle your funny bone, but it will leave you realizing that life is more than just living for yourself, and living without consequences, but that life is short, and the most important thing you should not lose focus on, is that you need to laugh, even if it's at yourself. Smith shows that you don't need to drop the 'F-bomb' every other word to get people to laugh; no his humor is thought-provocing humor, in that if you miss the punch-line immediately, somewhere down the road, you'll have a random thought and be brought back to 'Clerks', remember, and laugh until you hurt. From the opening scene, where Dante Hicks(played exceptionally well by Brian O'Halloran)falls out of his closet while trying to answer a phone call from his boss asking him to come in and open the convenience store where he works, "on his day off". When he gets there is where we are introduced to Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson), who shows up late to work. We are supposed to get the feeling that this is a pretty regular occurance, also. But Randal works at RST Video, which is located in the same building as the Kwik Mart where Dante works, just next he door over. Randal is Dante's best friend, and not the greatest example of someone who uses good customer service. About now is where we meet Jay and Silent Bob, and Dante's tow love interests - his current girlfriend Veronica, and 'the one that got away', Caitlin. Throughout the movie we get a rooftop game of hockey, because Dante 'isn't even supposed to be here today', and since he and a couple of his buddies always play hockey an Saturdays, they can't break tradition, and 'since he can't go where they are, they'll just have to come to him'; we also get fantastically humorous corallations of why we are here, and why we are working the jobs that we are, and why relationships work, and why they fail. The soundtrack for this movie is, in this person's mind, the most underrated and overlooked ever. The hilarious look at life working a minimum-wage job, with minimum-wage friends who have no real goal in life is so true-to-life and funny that many won't even realize why they are laughing. The ending of this movie will make you want to watch it again and again, and trtust me, it's still gonna be just as funny as it was the first time, because Kevin Smith is a true comic's comic. A DEFINITE 5-Star movie, and one not to miss.Read full review
Kevin Smith's unexpected indie hit "Clerks." chronicles a day in the life of Dante Hicks(Brian O'Halloran), beginning when he falls out of his closet answering a phone call from his boss to come in on his day off and open the store. Enter Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson)-- late, of course-- Dante's best friend and the somewhat unconventional clerk at neighboring RST Video, who proves in a series of unforgettable interactions with customers and finally an argument with Dante that "title does not dictate behavior". Enter a parade of argumentative and/or strange customers, Jay and Silent Bob, and Dante's two love interests, present girlfriend Veronica and ex-girlfriend Caitlin. What ensues is a rooftop game of hockey and scathing analyses of relationships, jobs, the personal politics of independent contractors on the Death Star, and ultimately of the two clerks themselves. Although the dialogue would be enough to make this movie a must-see, the fantastic soundtrack is an added bonus. "Clerks." provides some badly needed laughter and perspective for those who are stuck working minimum wage jobs and those who interact with them. Randal in particular is an idol for the unomotivated employee, and the love triangle between Dante, Caitlin and Veronica takes an unconventional turn at the end which should be appreciated by people sick of sappy love stories.Read full review
From Miramax, Clerks is one of those Kevin Smith movies that has developed a massive cult following… and for great reason. This movie is hilariously sarcastic and dark look at the mundane life of two, obviously, clerks. Take the tag line for instance: “Just because they serve you.. doesn’t mean they like you.” Rolling Stone called it “Screamingly Funny!” New York Newsday called it “The Funniest Movie of the Year!” If you’re in the market for what the Detroit News called “a lively comic adventure,” Clerks dleviers with wholesale hilarity. Its one wild day in the life of a pair of overworked counter jockeys whose razor-sharp wit and on-the-job antics give a whole new meaning to customer service. Even while braving a nonstop parade of unpredictable shoppers, the clerks manage to play hockey on the roof, visit a funeral home, and straighten out their offbeat love lifes. The boss is nowhere in sight, so you can bet anything can – and will – happen when these guys are left to run the store. Though the acting isn’t grade A, the writing is. The humor and filming are off-beat enough that Clerks is very different… and, at the end of the day, that’s a great thing.Read full review
Clerks entertains in the same way most Kevin Smith flick entertain and that is with the conversation. Clerks offers something different and fresh from a dialog standpoint and that makes the movie worthwhile. The obvious fact that it was a low-budget flick with a bunch of non-name actors is made irrelevant by very engaging character interaction and a wacky pltline that'll have you hunting for more Kevin Smith films. Dogma and Chasing Amy are the best of the bunch.
