About this product

Product Information

The Olympus M.Zuiko 75mm f/1.8 prime lens is an outstanding choice if you have an Olympus OM-D or PEN camera system. This telephoto lens is surprisingly compact, which makes it well-balanced when it is mounted on your camera. The small size does not mean that quality was sacrificed, as this model has excellent optical elements that produce photographic results you will be proud of. This Olympus telephoto lens is 2.5 inches long and has a diameter of 2.7 inches. It weighs 10.76 ounces. Being a smaller, lighter tool is one of the advantages of a prime lens, but the all-metal construction of this model gives this specimen a reassuring heft. It has a metal bayonet mount that is designed to be compatible with any Micro Four Thirds type digital cameras. The metrics of these lenses makes them ideal for indoor photography. They have a fixed focal length of 75mm, which is the 35mm equivalent of 150mm. They excel at portraits and other studio subjects, indoor sports action, and stage photos. A 16-degree diagonal angle of view means that the subject of your photo will be the center of attention, with little extraneous background clutter. The internal components of the Olympus M.Zuiko 75mm lenses include 10 elements in 9 groups. You will appreciate the three Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) elements that almost completely eliminate chromatic aberrations. There are also two High-Refractive (HR) elements that help to provide stunning image quality from corner to corner. All of the glass elements are coated with the Olympus ZERO coatings. These Zuiko Extra-Low Reflecting Optical layers reduce reflections, helping to eliminate flares and ghosting. They also help protect the surface of the glass, making it more durable. ZERO-coated lenses are particularly effective at minimizing the effect of strong backlighting. This 75mm prime lens has a Movie and Still Compatible (MSC) autofocusing mechanism. It is fast, smooth, and quiet. The MSC system is ideal if you are shooting video, as there will be no humming or buzzing to be picked up by the microphone. If you need to focus manually, you can do so with the wide, ribbed focusing ring. The ring moves easily, but it has just enough stiffness to let you make fine adjustments. With a minimum focus distance of 33.07 inches, this lens is not designed for macro shots but is optimized instead for mid-distance photography. It provides 0.1x magnification. One of the best features of this Olympus 75mm model is its wide maximum aperture of f/1.8. This setting gives you a shallow depth of field with a smooth bokeh that is ideal for portraits. You can also take low light photos at f/1.8, and you can expect razor-sharp images with this wide open setting. If you need a narrower aperture, it adjusts almost instantly up to a minimum size of f/22.Any 58mm filters can be attached to the front thread of this lens. The filter thread does not rotate when the focus changes, so you can successfully use accessories, like polarized filters, that must maintain the proper orientation to be useful.

    Fantastic Micro Four Thirds

This is the sharpest micro four thirds I own which includes a Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 (great), 14mm f'/2.5 (very good), and 42.5mm f/1.7 (also great). Allowing for terrific subject separation, depth of field and wonderful bokeh, the 75mm f/1.8 is a universally praised lens and was highly recommended in every review I read - including this one. I use B&W filters on all my lenses, mostly because of shooting style (fast), and definitely on this one. I purchased a JJC lens hood which works perfectly and easily costs half the Olympus lens hood. I use an Olympus E-P5 which is a great value for the money - used, in perfect condition (although the new Pen F looks fantastic but at three times the price). While this is a fairly large and heavy lens, it is by no means unmanageable, and it's ...

  • Sharp , fast , color accurate medium telephoto lens for MFT cameras.

This is an excellent fast 75mm lens for my Olympus EM 1 camera. With the camera's built in image stabilization, I am able to obtain sharp photos handheld photos with excellent color rendition. It is truly amazing what excellent results I am able to achieve hand held. This is equivalent to a full frame 150mm lens so it is on the telephoto side so it may not be right for every situation such as indoor small rooms. But for portraits, the f 1.8 produces aperture produces amazing results. This lens works equally well on my Panasonic GH4.

  • Very sharp, fast lens but

Don't get me wrong, this is an outstanding lens. But at its regular retail price of $899 it's no bargain. It's not weather sealed and the hood is not included. For a prime at this price it should be. If you can find a used one for a few hundred less than retail, then it become a good value. It's very sharp with good contrast wide open but it gets ultra sharp just stopping down slightly. It's all metal and very well machined. It's focus by wire with no stops for manual focus. It has some heft to it for a m/43's lens but not overly heavy. It balances nicely on OMD bodies.

  • Olympus Surpasses Itself

There's nothing about this lens that isn't superlative. Very sharp. Build quality unsurpassed. Very nice bokeh. It is like a piece of fine jewelry. I have not yet had a bad shot using this lens. The only negative thing that can be said about it can also be said about any prime lens: You may have to be able to back up to compose a shot that will be within the confines of your viewfinder. Other than that, there are no negative features. This is one of the best lenses (perhaps the very best lens) I have ever used. Dan T.

  • More of a luxury than a most have lens, very sharp, poor at manual focus

The good news is that this lens is very sharp and renders the out of focus areas very nicely. The bad news is that trying to manually focus this lens is a real pain. This is why it's a 4-star lens for me and not a 5-star lens. I was shooting at night with this lens recently and my model was being lit by a flash without a modeling light, it was too dark for auto-focus but I usually have no problem with manual focus but with this lens it took me quite a while to even figure out if I was focused in front of the model or behind her. Whether this lens is a good value is something you'll have to decide for yourself. If you're planning on shooting portraits, the focal length is long enough that you'll either need to be outside or in a reasonably large room indoors - for that reason I know ...
