This Sony unit has pretty easy setup if you use the firewire connection. This is a specific firewire cable, you can find it on ebay. FireWire 400 Cable Cord 4 Pin to 4 Pin Male to Male iLink DV Cable I can hear constant fan noise, not sure if this is just my unit. Conversion to DVD is a one button push, it starts up your camcorder and DVD at the same time. It then records the whole tape and pops out the finished DVD. I am a bit disappointed that all the flash memory connections are for input only. So, the only output is to DVD. I was also hoping for conversion to NTSC as an option, but so far I don't see it. All in all, it works well, I take the DVD and use Anyvideoconverter to convert to NTSC and then burn that disc with my computer. I believe this system will be easier than using a high dollar software that does not work a year later.Read full review

t one time, it was the first convenient device capable of recording DVDs at the touch of a button. This time has passed today this slow dumb device does something for itself. I stick blank DVD inside, it start doing something ignoring my commands to power off and eject disk. Refuse to record in PAL color system, so I cannot send my videos what I recorded to my friends in Europe. USB flash memory stick cannot be used with USB input. Big drawback no sound control at all. Poorly reproduces colors on DVD recordings skin in people with a raspberry tint. Why I give two stars instead of one - it does advantages ; compact size and it if using DV ilink 1394 cable - is good video quality and convenient camera control from a DVDcorder.

First off, this is not the 1st DVD Recorder that I've owned. It is however the weakest performer. Pros: Small footprint, Cool Mini-Monitoring screen, Big Buttons Cons: Limited Menu Labeling, Problems Recognizing Incoming Signal, Inconsistent Performance We've had two full-sized versions of this technology. Our 1st one was a Symphonic and died after four years. Our 2nd one is a Magnavox that performs flawlessly to this day. Our problem is that we use it to back-up our favorite TV Shows and movies from our DVR, but my wife has her own DVR that she records programming on that she often wants to back up, which means pulling the Magnavox out of the rack in the living room and hooking it up in the bedroom to archive her soaps and episodes of Dr. Phil. I decided to buy this small seemingly easy to operate version for her needs. I also thought it would be a great solution for when someone wants a copy of footage from my Handycam, whenever we capture life's moments. The Sony VRD-MC6 is a sleek and sexy little number that accepts multiple video inputs (composite RCA, digital in, SD Cards, Sony Memory Stick, etc.), but has very limited menu labeling. Our other DVD Recorders have intuitive labeling systems so that you can type in custom labels (up to 80 characters) of the content of the finished video. This little Sony does not. It also does not always recognize the RCA composite input for record, though it displays the incoming image on it's monitor screen. This happens most often when it's hooked up to the DVR output. Sure, like most other units, it won't record copy-protected content from video tape or even DVR, but it does not recognize nor will it even record just the news consistenly. And there's no predicting when it's going to act up. Both my mother and I are fans of the series "V". I record all episodes on DVR and back them up to DVD for later viewing in my den - at my leisure. I recorded two episodes to DVD on the Sony VRD-MC6 and finalized them. I then tried to make a copy for mom, and after unplugging & re-plugging the input several times and loading both a blank DVD-R and then a blank DVD+R discs, I still could not get it to record. I even turned the unit off and tried again an hour later to no avail. I saw the episode of "V" playing back on the Sony's little monitor but it displayed "waiting for input signal" or something like that. I backed out to make sure it was in VIDEO-DVD mode (not DV-DVD) and still nothing, so I just turned the unit off. The next day when I turned it on, it recorded the 2nd copy - no problem. For use with my Handycam, it's flawless. It reads Sony memory sticks, SD card and composite inputs from the handycam like a champ. In fact, it takes to anything Sony like a champ, however not gear from other manufacturers. Another annoying factor is that it has to format each disc before it will record on them, which can take up to a minute or more, so good luck catching something on the fly. Our other DVD recorders are pre-formatted for DVD+R and DVD-R, and only has to be formatted when using DVD-RW discs. Either my unit is defective, or there are some serious issues with the VRD-MC6. In any event, I'm seriously considering returning it. It works great as a field DVD recorder for my handycam, but it is otherwise frustrating when we try to use it for the purpose for which it was purchased. I still have to move the Magnavox to the bedroom to get my wife's stuff on DVD. EgadRead full review

I have been using the Sony VRD since it came on the market. It's by far the easiest to set up and use as well as the most versatile of its kind. Other brands create file formats that would have to be converted to a usable format.

This would have gotten five stars except for two issues: 1. It is loud. The Collings fan simply makes you wonder if something is wrong with the unit, but this is a regular complaint and the sound does not come through the recordings, so it is just laud with no other consequences. 2. No matter what unit I have tried, and I have tried many, the sound is not always fully synched with the video. This is a vey comment problem with writing VHS tape sources to DVD, but its better than not getting old videos workable at all.

This Sony DVD Recorder in my experience is one of the best. You have to shop around to get the best price because they are expensive. We have purchased 3 of these units. There quality and easy of use for our church works great. I have always purchase them as used and had great success because the quality of these units are superior to most all others.

Bought this model to transfer a lot of old VHS movies & TV shows I had recorded from my VCR to DVD... NOT copy-protected store bought movies. The first tape I copied seemed to record perfectly with excellent picture quality. But when I finalized the disc and played it in my DVD player, there was no left channel audio! I checked the audio connections, and even played the vhs tape in a vcr; where it played with perfect sound! I disconnected the power to the Sony unit & rebooted it, put in a different brand of recordable disc and tried a different vhs tape. This time the video image appeared on the display (same as before), but when I pressed record on the Sony unit, the image disappeared and display read “please connect video source.” From that point on, every tape I tried did that same thing. The manual’s trouble shooting section offered no solution to the problem either, so frustrated, I returned the unit. I have owned two different Sony dvd recorders over the past 15 years, and never had issues like this with either of them. Maybe my particular unit was a lemon, who knows??? But it was a brand new, factory sealed product. I expected more from Sony, it definitely wasn’t worth the money or my time!Read full review
