You can use just the main cover during summer then use the extra top zippered cover during winter. That was why I bought this. Summer bed is durable plus waterproof. My dog likes to dig before laying down. Winter cover is plush very soft. I did add an extra 3 inch memory foam along with the egg foam to make the dog bed extra extra comfortable.
