Had read this book long ago and desired a copy. If you like history, western US history, or have a particular interest in Arizona or indian history, this is a first hand account that is well written and without much of the cultural adjustment common in other early twentieth century histories of the west. If you know little of western US history this is still an interesting book because it explains it's reason for being: to address the conflict over credit for the "surrender" of Geronimo, which is a particularly long running adventure that involves explaining US policy toward indians, the human elements of judging and misjudging how to handle human problems and how this often competes more in the arena of self-aggrandizement versus competence, and it outlines the corruption in reservation management that led to many more indian-white conflicts than just the final Apache outbreaks. Thus, it is a pretty good primer as to why history repeats itself: not for some mysterious cosmic reason, but because human nature does not change. And why citizens are usually kept in the dark regarding the truth of events that have career and political ramifications.Read full review
