    New Orleans Cemeteries by Robert Florence

    I bought this book because I love New Orleans and one of its unique things --- above-ground cemeteries. They are fascinating. The "cities of the dead" as they are called, are unique ways of putting away the bodies of dead loved ones. The practice of above-ground burials is due to the high water table. New Orleans is at or below sea-level, and if not stored in the vaults as they are, many regular "6 feet under" burials would float to the surface during heavy rains or hurricanes. These mausoleums and shrines are often built with many details. Artistic decoration of the vaults is practically common. They are a site for regular addition of flowers, shells, money, etc. and sometimes provide a level of extravagance unknown to the loved one in life. This book provides many beautiful and ...
