About this product

Product Information

This epic, spectacular love story of Egyptian queen Cleopatra and the Roman leaders Julius Caesar and Marc Antony has dazzled audiences with its elaborate sets, daring costumes, and thrilling sea battle since its release, but these can't compare with Elizabeth Taylor as the mesmerizing Cleopatra, struggling to save her Egyptian empire. When this film was released, it was known as much for its opulent filmmaking as it was for its huge budget overruns--it took two years to film because of Taylor's various ailments and a major script rewrite by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, moving the shooting studio from England to Italy, and replacing the original director and the actors to play the Roman leaders--as well as the very public and tempestuous offscreen affair between costars Taylor and Richard Burton, who duplicated their romance on the silver screen as the doomed Cleopatra and her true love, Marc Antony. Despite all the hubbub surrounding the film, audiences realized that its spectacular story could not be denied, and it has remained a classic ever since. The triple-star power of Taylor, Burton, and Rex Harrison (playing Julius Caesar) radiates throughout this lengthy production, and Mankiewicz, a consummate magician at depicting the shadings of human emotion, directed this threesome in one of the most famous and gloriously powerful love triangles ever to be captured on film.

    Burton at his best

Fantastic DVD release of one of Richard Burton's finest screen performances, and the film that started the affair that started it all between him and Elizabeth Taylor. Burton's fire is matched by a particularly impressive performance by Roddy McDowall as Octavian, Antony's nemesis. Interestingly, Burton and McDowall had come straight off of playing rivals in CAMELOT on Broadway, and the chemistry shows. Taylor is beautiful and compelling as Cleopatra, and Rex Harrison is remarkably good as Julius Caesar--he literally made me forget Henry Higgins in this performance, which is quite a feat from such an indelible role. Haven't gotten to watch the Special Features yet, but can't wait. Overall, a fantastic packaging of an all-time classic, and a must-have for Burton and McDowall fans.

  • Cleopatra- still one of Liz Tayor's best movies!

This is one of Liz Taylor's most famous movies and it turns out to be fun to watch. The acting is good, scenery often spectacular and colorful, and the story is easy to follow. There are lots of actors in minor roles who later went on to fame, such as Carroll O'Conor (Archie Bunker). However it is very long and has an intermission as movies once had. This DVD was a good copy of the original and if you have a huge TV it is like going to the movies at home! And it was very reasonably priced with quick delivery.

  • $44 Million for THIS?

When released in 1963, "Cleopatra" was the most expensive picture ever made and Elizabeth Taylor the highest paid actor ever, raking in a cool million for the first time. The picture was seen as the ultimate in beautiful sets, costumes and art direction. It won all four of the art Oscars. Now the picture would cost $400 million and people would wonder why. We originally thought the money showed on the screen, but now the picture often looks tacky. Some of Miss Taylor's costumes make her look like a bored Boca Raton housewife, others like a stripper in Vegas. The sets are garishly painted and the special effects make the climactic sea battle look like kiddie's toys in the tub. The film is looooong. It is a solid four hours so pace yourself accordingly. The strange ...

  • Cleopatra oh yes.

Oh Elizabeth Taylor such a fine woman for a role she was meant to play. This is one of the few movies I enjoyed seeing her in that clearly made her such an attention grabber to see. I think my only gripe is that the movie came in a DVD format that required two disc to fit the movie. I guess perhaps the Bluray version will solve that issue. Yes this is a good purchase I recommend it.

  • Cleopatra (1963) 2001, 5 Star Collection DVD Set.

Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, Rex Harrison: Wow!!! This is an older set so no HD or Blu-ray but still visually stunning. Good extras in this “5 Star Collection” disk set. Still had the dusty Blockbuster wrapper on it too. The colors are great. Costumes and sets are incredible. I think I heard that this was the most expensive film ever made at the time (1963) and I can see that. The sets and wardrobe are incredible. The dialogue (Richard Burton, Rex Harrison and of course Liz) is great. One of my all time favorite films. All 248 minutes!!! Yep it’s long. Elizabeth Taylor is absolutely gorgeous and the director/wardrobe designer gives us a lot of chances to notice it too. This era of Hollywood is the best to me (late 50’s through mid 60’s). A must have for classic film people. Probably ...
