About this product
Product Information
Recording information: 12/31/1970-12/31/1977.This full-length disc -- which clocks in at practically an hour and 20 minutes -- highlights four New Year's Eve shows with the Grateful Dead at the Winterland Arena in San Francisco. The nine selections span seven years and are presented chronologically beginning with a funky and thorough exploration of the Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals/harmonica/organ) R&B-influenced vehicle "Easy Wind" from New Year's Eve 1970. The tune was not performed that often by the band, making it all the more enticing an inclusion. At the core of this rendition is the extended interaction that showcases McKernan's criminally underrated blues harmonica skills as well as the Grateful Dead's equally underappreciated -- and arguably too rarely utilized -- capacity for pulling off tremendously effective R&B numbers. Wisely, the brief transitory instrumental "Jam" preceding the achingly poignant "Black Peter" is included from New Year's Eve 1971, and demonstrates the combo's uncanny ability to seemingly conjure magical musical experiences from the ether. Even the most jaded Deadhead will be (at the very least) amazed at hearing the illusive muse descend to enhance this emotive reading. More adventuresome listeners will undoubtedly be drawn to the 18-plus minute psychedelic excursion on "Playing in the Band" from 1972 -- a year known for outstanding versions of the song. Jerry Garcia (lead guitar) and Phil Lesh (bass) are particularly prominent in their counterpoint and sonic hide and seek. Keith Godchaux's (piano) jazz-infused keyboard runs further complement the arrangement with an additional texture in the intricate and melodically rich mix of this wondrously exploratory and well-jammed rendering. The Grateful Dead would not return to Winterland for another New Year's Eve extravaganza until 1977. It is there that listeners find Bob Weir (rhythm guitar/vocals) leading the coupling of "Lazy Lightning" and "Supplication" that rounded off their first set that evening. This is followed by the half-hour "Sugar Magnolia"/"Scarlet Begonias"/"Fire on the Mountain" medley, commencing the second (post-midnight) set, replete with a New Year's Eve countdown and as incendiary a version as one could find during this era. New Year's Eves at Winterland (2003) is not available in traditional retail outlets and was offered only as a gratis premium for purchasers of the Closing of Winterland CD/DVD package from the Grateful Dead's own online and mail-order vendors. ~ Lindsay Planer
