Being used to working with the radicals to find a character and its meaning, I found the genealogical approach deeper and, at least at first, more confusing technique. However, the book is a very useful tool with an included English/Chinese dictionary as well as a radical index. The one thing that is still a mystery is defining proper word/character order for good communication. I would recommend this book to the serious student.

This is a wonderful resource for a first time learner of Mandarin Chinese. It has more than 4000 characters sorted by only 182 radicals. This book includes the simplified versions of characters, but I feel is better for focusing on the Traditional. The print is very small, so even though I have good eyesight I felt the need to get reading glasses for the hours on end I spend at a time diving into this book. Overall a fantastic buy, but do be aware. It's about the same font size as a nutrition label. But in Chinese.
