Notes2020 release. Daniil Trifinov's, Silver Age, recorded with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra, recalls a time when Russia's composers, poets, and artists were among the most original anywhere in the world. It illustrates the artistic audacity and brilliance of a turbulent era in the country's history with works by 3 of it's most pioneering composers: Scriabin's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in F sharp minor Op.20, Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor Op.16, and Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka.

  • Wide-ranging and rich: Russia's Silver Age

Trifonov brings together works by three Russian composers, with three keyboard works of Stravinsky, two by Prokofiev, and one—the piano concerto—by Scriabin. The recordings are a full-throated celebration of Russia's Silver Age: a shortish period that began just before the dawn of the twentieth century. The performances of these (mostly really daunting) pieces are spot-on. Trifonov's pianistic abilities are evident throughout, but it is his thoughtful presentation, precise and witty for the quasi-Baroque Sérénade en la of Stravinsky to lush and demanding for the sounds of the (rarely heard) Scriabin concerto. This is an extremely thoughtful, musically rich program, and I shall enjoy hearing it many times over in the future.
