  • Average unit, older product

Having owned a previous version of this unit, I felt that I had a head start in the set-up process. Where this particular version of the product had issues, was that it was sold as a Topo! unit. But Magellan no longer supported the free Topo! upgrade. And when I purchased it, it never worked properly, couldn't download any maps, so got my money refunded. I ended up purchasing another series of maps for the unit. In that case, download and use was easy. The only negative I have for the unit itself is that I think the screen is too small, and hard to read out in the field. The color screen is not backlit enough to be seen in the sunlight, and I needed stronger glasses just to see things on the screen. I would recommend a larger version for field work, and if you need Topo maps, go with the Summit maps version.

  • Good basic handheld, a little dated, but works great!

Good basic handheld. It's out of production and a little dated, but performs quite well with the SiRF III receiver. The basemap is one of the best I've seen, even has back roads in our rural area. You won't find that on a Garmin base map! It is limited by its internal memory and no memory expansion slot. But if you use third party maps and replace the rather large basemap with a smaller one, it is more than sufficient. It is light, easy to read in daylight, and battery life is very acceptable, although not as good as Garmin's eTrex line. If you are looking for a good basic handheld and don't need the latest and greatest, this is a good choice if you can find one in good condition and don't mind dated software. It is not affected by the week number rollover issue and with the latest firmware it works quite well. I purchased it as a backup to my main GPS receiver and have found myself using the eXplorist 310 more!

  • Very convenient navigator!

Very convenient navigator for those who can do raster cards. The only restriction - the extent of internal memory. I have removed the basic world map, and I have established about 1,5 Gb of cards which I have made itself, including satellite. Works very well!

  • Good little workhorse

I bought this specifically for geocaching. In that respect it is good being able to store hundreds of caches thus obviating the need to make a paper copy of the days objectives. The built in map is ok for street navigation but not a lot of help for cache location. By that I mean that it's accurate and shows when you have arrived but doesn't give a pictorial view of your surroundings. I previously used my phone which has Google maps installed so I can see which tree to go and examine once I put the co-ordinates in. In addition I used a GPS receiver with bluetooth capability linked to my phone and that has much better GPS than the phone and when in this configuration the phone switches off it's own GPS thus saving battery. There is nothing between the 310 and the bluetooth receiver so really it was an expensive alternative to paper copy.

  • Used the 310 for hunting

I used it to find new hunting places. And to track our movement thru the high mountains of colorado. It was amazing that the 310 tracked every trail. And found new hunting in our unit. The only draw back was it does not show private land or least land.
