Implementing Lionel O27 turnouts with modern enhancements
Actually, I bought both the right hand and left hand turnouts - for some reason ebay split it into two orders and shipments. Anyway, the review applies to both units. These units work well in that the train never derails when it passes through the turnout. They are older units (I don't think they are still manufactured) for O27 systems. They normally work off of track power but can be converted to work off of fixed power (which I did). If there is enough extra wire under the coil cover the conversion is very simple. If not, then it is quite complicated. One of my units had extra wire, the other didn't. I don't remember whether it was the left or right hand unit that had sufficient. Anyway, if you don't have enough wire to access then you have to drill out the rivets on the bottom. That is a major exercise and I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. Unfortunately, until you pull the coil cover off there is no way of knowing whether the unit you've purchased has sufficient wire for the conversion. Also be aware that the design of these units means that, after conversion to fixed power, you should not leave the train on the switch for an extended period of time or you will overheat the coil. Fortunately, it isn't hard to make a capacitive discharge unit to protect it. Basically, if you want to use the units the way Lionel originally intended, they are simple plug and play. If you are serious hobbyist and want to do funky things, it may require more work.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned
