Great tool for the job
It's too bad that a simple USB cable is so expensive, but it's a great tool for the job and I'd say a necessity for me. I love being able to simply plug in my BMV 700/702 into my phone to read readings and more importantly to set the settings. It's so much easier than the front control panel itself. I then connect this to my Raspberry Pi to upload the data so I can view my solar charge values remotely. Love it.

Expensive Add- On For Your Controller
I also found the software bizarre- Win 7 needed to be put on 256 colors for software to render well enough to read. I left the cable plugged in, and the controller literally stopped working until it was unplugged- No biggy, but don't overlook! Overall, they have you over a barrel once you buy the controller.

Simple, yet provides isolation between usb interface and panel
This does a good job of getting all "fractions of watts" out of my solar panel... With a partially snow-covered panel, and a very cloudy day today, I'm getting 42 watts out of my 250W panel... every little bit helps, and this way, my battery tends to stay topped off.
