Reviews
"A white-knuckle trip through a gritty, frightening, and all-too-plausible post-apocalypse. You won't know whether to root for or be afraid of heroine Elka, and you won't be able to put the book down."-- Paul Tremblay, author of A Head Full of Ghosts   "A remarkable first novel that drew me in from page one. I was reminded of the beautiful savagery of Cormac McCarthy's The Road and the elegiac overtones of Dickey's Deliverance while reading--but Lewis has crafted something completely unique here, carried so powerfully along by the voice of its indelible young narrator."-- Nick Cutter, author of The Troop   "Addictive and compelling..an apocalyptic thriller with a dark, horrible heart. It's impossible not to root for Elka as she fights her way through a chilling -- but disturbingly familiar -- wasteland. "-- Kelly Braffet, author of Save Yourself   "Stark and soulful, The Wolf Road is a brutal yet poignant journey into the truth of one girl's origins in a shattered wilderness. It masterfully dances between the savagery of the wild and the raw, blunt humor of frontier logic. A rollicking, striking read."-- Robert Jackson Bennett, author of City of Stairs   "Dazzling...a literary thriller that weaves lush language and unforgettable characters into a genuine page-turner." - Scott Hawkins, author of The Library at Mount Char   "An extraordinary novel--dark and funny and full of wild energy. Elka is a brilliant creation--fierce and vulnerable at the same time. Her story and her voice pull you in from the first page and never let you go. Gripping and unforgettable."-- Antonia Hodgson, author of The Devil in the Marshalsea
Synopsis
Elka barely remembers a time before she knew Trapper. She was just seven years old, wandering lost and hungry in the wilderness, when the solitary hunter took her in. In the years since then, he's taught her how to survive in this desolate land where civilization has been destroyed and men are at the mercy of the elements and each other. But the man Elka thought she knew has been harboring a terrible secret. He's a killer. A monster. And now that Elka knows the truth, she may be his next victim. Armed with nothing but her knife and the hard lessons Trapper's drilled into her, Elka flees into the frozen north in search of her real parents. But judging by the trail of blood dogging her footsteps, she hasn't left Trapper behind--and he won't be letting his little girl go without a fight. If she's going to survive, Elka will have to turn and confront not just him, but the truth about the dark road she's been set on. The Wolf Road is an intimate cat-and-mouse tale of revenge and redemption, played out against a vast, unforgiving landscape--told by an indomitable young heroine fighting to escape her past and rejoin humanity.

Although this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.

Goldfinger Goldsboro Books, 23-25 Cecil St., London, WC2N 4E2, United Kingdom, S & N Limited Edition/and Crown Publishing Group, A Division of Penguin Random House “Think on why I ain’t killing you.”----Kreagar Elka doesn’t remember her parents. She lives in the wilderness, after a war that destroyed civilization, with a man named Trapper. Trapper teaches her to survive in the wilds but hates the small towns around them; he has a terrible secret that he doesn’t want Elka to find out about. For a brief time before living with Trapper, Elka lived with an old woman she called NaNa, but Elka got separated from her during a “thunderhead”, a giant storm that occurs sporadically since the wars, that the people refer to as “the Damn ...

  • A Young Girl In the Snare of Evil

Grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. Story is told from the viewpoint of a young girl with no schooling who speaks in a manner you're unaccustomed to reading. The author describes a post-apocalyptic world, cold and depressing, where the girl's survival and hunting skills are her advantages. She seeks to escape awful evil before realizing that she's actually racing toward a confrontation with it. The story has unexpected twists and turns, making it difficult to put the book down.
