This is a great little pocket sized camera with a small screen and a viewfinder. My newer Canon PowerShot A4000 is larger, with cheaper components than the older Elph SD800 IS. The Elph SD800 has been a fantastic camera and takes great photos. Although the megapixels and zoom are smaller than most newer cameras, I still find this camera takes great photos. Also, the battery life is phenomenal! I took this camera to Europe and didn't have to charge it once! I love having the viewfinder. You can see the zoom through the viewfinder. This is a great asset, as most newer cameras have eliminated viewfinders in favor of larger screens. I broke the screen on my Elph SD500, and the viewfinder was a life saver! Definitely recommend this camera as a great value. Sturdy, quality parts, compact, and takes great pics! Overall awesome, just without all the bells & whistles of the newer cameras. My new A series SD4000 by canon has the higher resolution, but is larger, with a cheap battery charger and the charge doesn't last long on the new camera. The ELPH series is a higher end camera.Read full review
I bought my 1st SD800 IS in 2007 and have used it ever since as a back up for my DSLR during my travels o US and Europe. Its a great camera! While 7.1 MP is pretty small by today's standards, most people don't enlarge their photos past 8x10 if they enlarge them at all. The 3.8x zoom s perfectly adequate for most photos and better than on most phones. I have purchased two of these on eBay for my grandchildren because if one is accidentally dropped over the side of a ship, it's a much smaller loss than an iPhone!

I bought this camera for my husband. He lost his other camera--same model. He'd bought a new Cannon to replace the lost one and didn't like the lack of a viewfinder. Fortunately we found the older model available on eBay. It takes very good pictures, is compact and easy to use. He loves it. Many of the new cameras lack a viewfinder. We both like having that feature although I mostly use my Cannon digital SLR for photography. The PowerShot is much easier to carry, fits easily in a handbag or clipped waist. I'm borrowing it to take to California next week. Leaving my SLR home as I don't want to have to stow it on the plane.
An excellent small conpact camera. Best portable camera I ever had and was my go to before smart phone cameras took over. I like them so much, I just had to buy another. Compact, easy to use, great image quality.

This was my first digital camera, and I purchased a second SD800 as a back-up. I love the wide-angle lens and distortion appears minimal in the landscape shots. While processing photos for sale listings, I did find that boxy or square items would show some distortion. If you use Adobe Photoshop, distortion is easily removed using Filter Distort Lens Correction. Photo quality is excellent and there's a macro setting which yields good detail for close-ups. I'm happy with the video quality as well. IS (image stabilization) eliminates any shakiness. The settings I normally use were pretty easy to learn and there are some functions I still haven't tried. The only thing I miss is getting the instant action shots, as there is shutter lag typical of point-and-shoots. Until a compact, lightweight SLR is available and affordable, this camera has all I need. My initial purchase was based on photographer Ken Rockwell's 2006 review. If you are looking for a new or used digital camera, he has covered other models as well. Read his Canon SD800 review on his website. ------------------------------ Feb 2018 update: I'm still using this as my primary camera, mostly for listing photos. All functions still work as perfectly as the day I received it, and I bought it used with visible wear ... amazing!Read full review

i bought this as a replacement for another sd800 that i lost. it in turn was a replacement for the original one i bought about 4 years ago. obviously i like this camera. sure, recent point-and-shoot cameras have way more megapixels and features but this one is adequate for my purposes. 7.1 MP may not seem like a lot these days, but unless you're shooting photos for National Geographic, that's enough resolution. it's fairly light and compact which is good for backpacking and hiking. and not many point-and-shoots offer wide-angle like this one. this camera was in very good condition, almost like new.
The canon SD800 is an easy to use pocket sized camera that's easy to understand and use once you get to know it. I love the rechargeable battery and charger my other Olympus camera takes AA batteries and goes through them quickly. The wide angle setting is great for panoramic pictures.

Perfect size, so you can always have it with you, even if you don't carry a purse. Very high image quality; good zoom range; effective image stabilization. In the beginning I thought I needed the eye-level finder. Now I never use it. The live view LCD panel lets me hold the camera high to get above crowds, etc. The eye level finder gives a slightly more stable shooting position and helps to minimize shake, but the IS more than makes up for this. Recently discovered video shooting, which is a nice bonus. Cameras in this range are always a compromise. For example: Manual mode doesn't really offer full control; you have to use Exposure compensation +/- to lighten or darken a picture. And it's hard to thrown a background out of focus: cameras in this size range have great depth of field and there's not much you can do about it. Reason for purchase: My wife's Canon SD500 recently died -- kept draining batteries (even new OEM batteries). I've had an SD800 IS for about 3 years, and it has functioned perfectly. I was willing to spend much more than this cost on a new Canon, but after reading about them on the web, this one seemed like the best choice for our needs.Read full review
I like this camera because it is a convenient size, fits easily into my pocket or purse, is lightweight, takes good to excellent pictures, has features which are easy to use and understand. For a point and shoot camera, it has exceptional quality for taking both close up and distance shots.
We recently spent 3 days snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. My previous pix with other digitals cameras were not nearly as good as those taken with this little gem. The waterproof case is a bit difficult to find but well worth it if you want to protect this camera in any setting. The case is waterproof and also keeps one from dropping the camera. The underwater setting give brilliant and realistic colors to your underwater pictures. It also takes great movies. On the way back from Australia I took a movie of my niece's wedding so her grandmother could witness the wedding. Even the sound was excellent. With a 4 gigabyte memory chip you can shoot all day. The battery has never run out on me but I change it and recharge for about every hour of shooting. One fully charge battery lasts for a full day of fishing. I highly recommend this camera.Read full review
