Perhaps the most popular Japanese television series in the United States at the time of release, Dragon Ball Z hits the PlayStation 2 in this 3D brawler. Just as in the anime TV show, fighting is the focus of this PS2 game. The main Story mode allows players to battle through crucial moments from theDragon Ball Z Saiyan, Namekian, and Andriod sagas, through to the Cell Games, learning new skills and upgrading their characters along the way. Other modes allow players to enter customized battles with their improved characters, to edit their characters' acquired skills, and to go head-to-head against other human-controlled fighters.
The game features seven different modes of play in all (one for each Dragon Ball), but some of the later modes must be unlocked. Nearly two dozen characters from the television series are playable in the game, each with as many as 60 combo moves. Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, Frieza, Krillin -- all the major players are featured. Designed to please the countless avid fans of the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z animated shows, the game's character voices are also accurate, provided by the original FUNimation actors from the series.
My only issue was that the description said there were only light surface scratches on the disc when there's actually a crack in the disc. Every feature of the game works fine except for when I reached a certain part of the story, it gets stuck at the loading screen. I've tried restarting the system and various other things but none have worked so far. I was happy at first but now I'm kinda disappointed because the game isn't working properly
This is the first in the Budokai series, solid game play.
I prefer the story mode
and it is a good intro to the game play which will you a good base for the more advanced game play of the latter games
This game (2002) was what set the foundation for several sequels. It’s almost 20 years old now, but it has all the original voice actors for the main plot. The story goes from the “Saiyan” saga to the “Frieza” saga to the “Android” saga and ends at that point. There is an “extended” story mode that allows you to play out different scenarios and battles throughout various points in the game after you’ve beaten the final boss. There’s even a few unique “what-if” scenarios that are just for fun and not related to the real plot of the anime.
The music in this game is incredible. The story mode is challenging. The cutscenes are awesome. You will find yourself playing level after level just to see what happens next even if you are a long time fan of this show and you know the entire story like the back of your hand, the voice acting is excellent and keeps you entertained in between battles.
