As Good As It Gets!
This locomotive looks gorgeous and runs amazingly smooth at all speeds. I honestly can't see any way that this product could be improved. It looks great in any service, pulling a long string of freight cars, or on the point of the Overland (MTL heavyweight passenger cars), or at the head end of a twelve car streamliner like the City of Portland (Kato smoothside). Buy one, you won't regret it.

Amazing Detail and Runs Great, but Handle with Care!
I love this train, but be aware that it is a bit fragile, like all KATO models of this type. Upon gently opening the package, the cab fell off. When I pulled it out, the front boiler plate fell off. The same thing happened to me with other KATO models. It's a little annoying, but the parts pop back on easily and nothing has ever fallen off when running on the track. The model is extremely detailed, so you also need to be careful not to break off any little pieces. The movement is extremely fluid and KATO precision engineering is clearly evident. It has no problem going fast or pulling a long train of cars. The front Mars light is a beautiful color but does not light up, and the tender has no functional backup light, either. Better than Average, a grade of B.
It is Kato quality and that speaks for itself. On the other hand, like most Kato Steam locomotives, it's pulling power is not necessarily stellar. This is due to 2 factors: the lack of strong motors and not using metal shells to enhance pulling power. Overall, I give this model a grade of B.

I think the Kato FEF3 Northern is the best steam engine Kato has made for the U.S. market. It is better than the Mikado and GS4.
