Toshiba's 1st Flagship DVD recorder and a must own
I own two of these now, and they are the most important pieces of equipment I own. These Toshibas' are to DVD what Nakamichi is to the cassette. Toshiba invented the dvd, and these recorders have a menu system that is the most extensive I have ever seen in a home product, and I have been a Sony dealer since 1986. I have churned out over 1000 dvds on the first one, and it still operates perfectly. The only age it shows: the first two years I owned it, it edited within 1 frame, which is awesome. Now it edits 8-10 frames backwards, but that is easily adjusted by frame advancing 8-10x before making the chapter divide. All dvd recorders MUST have a hard drive to be of any real worth, and the 160 gig HD here will record 80 hours at Sp (2hour 7 min per disc), or 40 hours at the 9.2 megabytes ... All dvd recorders MUST have a hard drive to be of any real worth, and the 160 gig HD here will record 80 hours at Sp (2hour 7 min per disc), or 40 hours at the 9.2 megabytes per second (1 hr 4 min) that is almost blu-ray speed. There are 42 different recording speeds, instead of the 4-6 on most recorders, so you can maximize the data space on every disc you make. There are 3 audio speeds, so you can record music with stellar quality. This unit also works great as a dvr (time-shift recording of various channels like VHS did). Toshiba stopped the manufacture of these machines as the HD-DVD era began, and they had planned to market hd-dvd recorders with component (red, green, blue connectors) and HDMI connectors. Sony killed all that by convincing the world that blu-ray was better (like Panasonic-JVC did to Sony's beta with the VHS system, ironically invented by Sony several years before beta) and now we are suffering the lack of technology, as Blu-ray has not offered anything like Toshiba had planned with desktop, laptop and stand-alone recorders. Since the Toshiba recorders only have analog S-video as their best interface, HD programming suffers a down-grade in quality when it is recorded. However, the Toshibas have a firewire input, which allows perfect transfer from mini-DV camcorders, and thus, beautiful quality DVDs. Ironically, I've seen Sony HD camcorders dropping their fire-wire outputs, even though they invented it, in favor of USB outputs, which the Toshibas don't have. I was hoping to find a compatible cable (fire-wire to mini-USB), but have not found that yet! The RD-XS52 is also nice in that it doesn't have the TV Guide based recording system it's two follow up brothers, the XS54 and XS55 have. It is also totally silent compared to the other two, which have noticable fan sound (not bad, though) They have 250 gig hard-drives, making them a little hotter, but even the step-down XS35 (160 gig) has the fan noise. If you can find the RD-XS52, 54, 55, or their stepdowns, the XS34 and 35, BUY THEM IMMEDIATELY! The XS52 stepdown, the 32, has only an 80 gig hard drive. The main diff between the fifty series and the thirty series is the fifty series has upconverting (the 52 to 1080i - not sure if the two later models have 1080p conversion) If you have ever seen the upconversion of a Toshiba HD-DVD player compared to anyone else, including their own upconverting dvd players, you know full well what the creator of dvd is capable of. And since Blu-ray has failed to deliver the technology to the man in the street, these machines are still the BEST thing out there. 'Nuff said.
