Old Pentium 4 functions well in Old 478 socket motherboard

Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz Norwood works in 2002 Compaq Presario 5423US as upgraded original Pentium 4 1.6GHz Williamette. However, there is no HP / Compaq BIOS update for my 5423US to utilize Norwood CPU's. To bypass 1801-microcode patch error , need ROM BIOS update which there is none. I had to use F12 Network then F1 Update PC Configuration then I was able to Boot to Windows XP logon screen. It does appear I will attempt a 2.0GHZ 256/400 Williamette since that is the last and highest of the Williamette series CPU's and hopefully there will be no 1801-microcode patch error. I could not recognize any change in performance - operating speed of my PC in the upgrade from 1.6GHz to 2.8GHz. Computing process difference appeared to be minimal.

  • Awesome upgrade!

I have 2 Dell Dimension 2350 desktops here that needed something to get the Internet performance that I was looking for in them. This P4 2.8ghz 512k cache 400 FSB CPU was the final answer to get them both running as fast as possible and surfing the internet and YouTube smoothly. Thanks to this upgrade, 2 users will be able to use these 13 year old desktop computers for some more years to come. The price can't be beat and shipping was very quick. Thanks.

  • Good quality and decent bargain for older builds/systems.

This is a very nice processor for older computers, the last one lasted for 12 years, often overclocked to 3.0ghz.I used it primarily for a media center, streaming videos and audio like live radio. I bought this for a rebuild after replacing the capacitors on an old motherboard and it runs like new. Handles Win 7 like a champ. No dual core or threads but still does the job. Good for a budget build to extend the life of an older system. Originally it ran XP pro for 8 years + which was a good match for this processor.

  • Low cost system upgrade.

Installed this in an older Mobo with 1.75v default vcore and 24x max configurable multiplier and on first boot it auto-configured for 1.5v vcore and 28x (cpu multiplier is locked but the point is it worked with an older Mobo and BIOS). The system appears stable so far, CPU temp is normal using original heatsink and fan. Overall a nice performance upgrade for relatively little cost.

  • Good Upgrade.

I needed this CPU to upgrade my son's older desktop to a faster processor. He's not gaming on it as it's too old but works great for school and surfing the web. So far, works perfectly!
