Solid, versatile lectern microphone
This is a dependable mic for speech that works well in a lectern-mounted XLR jack and could also be used on a stand with a firm mic clip. Depending on your use, the switch and tally light on the "S" version might be very useful or might just add a couple of superfluous inches to the preamp body. The wide availability of interchangeable Microflex electret capsules in omni, cardioid, and supercardioid patterns could be a problem solver in special circumstances. This mic appears to work fine on as little as 12V phantom power. One caution--typical of miniature goosenecks, there's no mechanical isolation between the capsule, neck, and preamp body/connector. This mic is very susceptible to mechanical vibration unless it's plugged into a shock-mounted XLR jack or held by an isolating stand ... One of the best podium microphones I have found.
The key feature on this microphone is get one with the WL-185 cardiod microphone element. The Shure WL-185 cardioid microphone element shows up in a number of Shure microphone models, including lapel style mics, conference style mics, and this MX418 goose neck style podium microphone. The WL-185 microphone element is very natural sounding and can be EQ'd to eliminate feedback problems, while still sounding very natural. Many other podium microphones are thin sounding and are prone to feeding back when gained up sufficiently to pick up well. The pickup pattern of the Shure MX418 microphone with the WL-185 cardioid microphone element is wide enough to pick up the entire podium area with clarity and detail. The small diameter of the cord could become a problem if the wire gets stepped on. Otherwise a great deal.
