A funny title Wagons East for this movie
It is a very comical movie which I like and watch again. I would recommend for others to watch if they like comedy movies.

"Wagons East!" recieved much publicity in it's time. Not by mammoth marketing or praised reviews but due to the death of John Candy during, or shortly after as reports vary, filming. With the hype of this being Candy's final performance audiences would naturally raise the bar to unachievable heights, and the film would be damned regardless. Even at the age of 8 when "Wagons East!" was released in theaters, I was atleast passively aware of Candy's death and the overall disdain folks had for the film. "Wagons East!" is not Candy's masterpiece, or even a mention in his greatest works, BUT it most certainly is a fun piece and is greatly entertaining. "Wagons East!" takes the satire/slapstick route as it toys with history for its ... "Wagons East!" recieved much publicity in it's time. A group of settlers realize that the west wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and the hardships are abound, so they decide to pack up and head back home (hence, WAGONS EAST!). John Candy is Harlow, a man with a mysterious past, who decides to lead the way as their Wagon Master. Of course, we must have the evil corporation that wishes to thwart anything against the companies' agenda because without evil conglomerates stopping the freedom of the soul this just wouldn't be America. As a comedy the film isn't a gut buster. Few one liners, sparse are the hilarious bits. Instead we have a constant series of running gags, character humor, and a series of subtle slapstick shenanigans. I personally like this style at times because the feel of the movie is pleasant and doesn't require a scene set up to tell one joke, then another and another in place of a plot where the story is essentially scenes strung together by one bit jokes. "Wagons East!" has a plot going for it. It tells a story, the humor is embedded in the story, and those types of comedies I feel draw a viewer in with greater depth. But judging the public revulsion I am guessing I'm in a minority. I was entertained the entire trip, I have no complaints. It's a sad trip at times because you realize this was the last show John Candy would be a part of, and especially growing up in the early 90s John Candy was a huge part of entertainment for youth, and it hits home. John Candy does a great job, and the rest of the cast does just as well. The costumes are fun, and John C. McGinely is a hoot, and the satire on the Great West myths never gets old. If anything, I can recomend this simply to honor John Candy's work, but without the handicap, I think it only fair to give "Wagons East!" the chance at a fair judgement that it never got.

Its the old West and the settlers of this town have had it! They are all sick of the life style and miss the lives they gave up back home. So they hire a wagonmaster (John Candy) to take them East! Back to civilization, and law and order. This was John Candy's last movie, suffering a fatal heart attack just before the finish. This movie has its fun moments, but for the most part, John didn't look all that good at the time. He was a funny comedian and Hollywood lost a lot when he died.Its the old West and the settlers of this town have had it! They are all sick of the life style and miss the lives they gave up back home. So they hire a wagonmaster (John Candy) to take them East! Back to civilization, and law and order. A hand full of citizens of various occupations and orientations realize the west is not all it is cracked up to be. They decide to go back east, but to do this they will need a skilled and knowledgeable wagon master. Who should stumble in but the best wagon master in the west, James H. Harlow (John Candy). Naturally there is a money grubbing cabal apposed to this move and they will stop at nothing to throat the "Wagons East" plan. Well designed with a select group of actors that never overplayed their parts. The consumes and scenes here exceptionally good for the comedy. The Indians look like Indians and the floozies look floozy.
